Tune for NC MX-5 in Perth?

Postby opilot87 » Sun Nov 04, 2012 2:31 pm

I've recently picked up an 05 NC mx5 which I am loving every moment in. However I'm utterly confused as to all the different tune options available and how it is carried out. I have a stock car which I am about to fit a GWR Q muffler, and in the future may consider the GWR catted street header. What is my best option for an ECU reflash/tune? I'm in Perth, can I go to a workshop for this, or do I need to be sent equipment to do it myself, or do I need to send my ECU in the post?

If anyone can refer me to the most suitable contact/business that would be super.

Cheers,
Ollie

Steve Lee @ KYP <http://www.kyp.com.au> is the go to MX5 mech in Perth, but I'm not sure if he can help you with the specific mods you're after. Back in the old days it easy, just go to Wheelspin:

If you haven't already, make contact with the Perth MX5 folks:

I wouldn't worry if you are just adding a muffler.

When you get headers installed, I'd grab the flash after that.

Have a chat to chris @ mx5racing. He knows all about the reflashes. I got mine done through him with no problems!

I'd forget the 'Q' and go straight to the headers. That's unless you're just after the rear end bling.

If you're after a louder exhaust note then the headers will give you that plus the extra power and performance that goes with it.

Hi ollie
I have just finished an NC track day car and am running with the moto-east sniper tune which is using a reflashed original ECU, the tuning kit is around $750 which gives you a basic performance tune and a template for tuning on a dyno.
I am running Goodwin 4 into 1 headers and midpipe with an IL motorsport rear muffler, Brembo brakes, BC Racing Coil overs, adjustable sway bars, Ultra racing strut braces, Mazdaspeed CAI, Adavn Racing rims with Toyo R888 Proxie Tyres, Cobra racing seats, Harddog roll bar, Exedy lightened flywheel and racing clutch.
My road NC runs 4-2-1 goodwin headers with standard midpipe and standard muffler.
I will have the car at our track day on the 18th November in from 8.00 am til 12.00 pm at the RAC center in Grogans Road near the international airport.
So come down and have a chat and we can give you some info on uprating your NC.
There will also be other NC's ther in different levels of modification for you to have alook at.

Thanks all for the very useful information. I only purchased the car a month ago, and have recently become member of the mx5 Perth club already! Haven't had a chance to go to any events yet.

I live fairly close to the RAC centre so I am quite keen to come down and have a chat and see some other mx5's. BTW would you recommend to participate in this event as a beginner? Not too sure how these work. I did do an MR2 drive day experience there a while back and had an absolute blast. In fact, probably locked in my decision to get an mx5 I always wanted in the near future!

A Goodwin Q muffler is in the post already, I got it partly due to wanting a nicer/deeper and slightly louder sound, and I have to say aesthetics also played a large part. Any minor performance boost is a bonus. I was all set to order the new Goodwin street catted header at the same time (wanted this due to legalities, only slightly louder than stock, and most of the significant power increase). But pulled out as no one from Australia had fitted one yet, and didn't want to be the guinea pig. I may still consider it later on down the track. I had heard on the miata forums that even on a stock NC a reflash gave a little extra power and noticeable responsiveness increases. I'll give the contacts listed above a buzz soon.

Hey Ollie
If you liked driving the MR2 then you are going to love chucking the MX5 around.
New or experienced, we dont mind, come on down.
If you want to compete on the day I would suggest you forward the AASA paperwork to Don or bring on the day with $50 and we will send it off for you.
Dont try and send it off now as you wont get it back in time.
Hopefully see you Sunday week.
