thanks guys. Someone had to be the first! I just want to make sure potential buyers are aware of the problems I have faced. With the support of Chris, Dave and Jay we will soon make NC forced induction a viable and legal option in New South Wales at least.

A possible turbo kit is just around the corner as well.

Exciting times for barge!

Nice trailblazing!
Congrats to all involved in developing this to a functional and legal point.

I added this in another thread however the info is of relevance here too.

IM240 test is 100% free of charge at the RMS (RTA) Emissions testing station at Botany or Penrith.

Unlike a full ADR emissions test the IM240 is completed at normal operating temperature and other parts of the full ADR, such as evaporative emissions, are not checked. We have previously completed full ADR 37/00 and 37/01 tests and they are expensive and time consuming. The ADR79/00 and 79/01 tests are even more expensive only few facilities are capable to completing the test. These include Ford Australia where we had one done, VIPAC (formally the EPA Victoria site at Altona where we had another one done….). Orbital in WA does a few 79 and 79/01 tests however unless you have deep pockets it is not financially viable. We had the Mitsubishi Evo 7 and 8 test done there back in 2005/6. Toyota used to do them to however I understand they no longer offer this service to the general public.

Most States and Territories of Australia accept the IM240 test as part of an engineering sign off to ensure cars remains legal for the road. The major exception to this is VIC where Vic Roads and the VIC EPA would require a full ADR test (at considerable cost).

The second issue regards the brakes… The RMS (RTA) has a requirement that once you have a 20% increase over stock you need to do a full brake test on the car. This is a regulated standard overseen by the Dept. of Infrastructure -

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... 011_v3.pdf

According to the NVDS the NC develops 118 kW at the flywheel. We know a STD one has 91 kW at the wheels. Based on the dyno reports, the SC NC develops in excess of 140+ kW at the wheels with some quoting 160kw plus. As you can see the increase is substantially in excess of the 20% allowed over stock.

Our engineer and I were hoping we could avoid this by supplying "alternate evidence" based on a similar car. I detailed the Mazda 3 MPS, which weighs 30% more, has brakes marginally bigger than the NC and has 70% more power. Unfortunately despite our submission the RTA advised they wouldn’t accept this and a full test was required. Basically this now means we need to do an abridged brake test to ARD31 which is basically a whole heap of stops from 100 km/h.

The NC MX5 will comfortably meet these requirements and we will have this completed in the next few weeks.

Thanks to everyone for your calls and emails of support - it has been a great team effort for everyone involved. :D

Great stuff Chris! :D Gotta wonder about that brake test. I'm sure it'll pass with no trouble at all ... the brakes on NCs are phenomenal.

Yes they are!! One of the things that the people who hire our cars for circuit racing and Targa events always rave about are the brakes.

I'll 2nd that on NC brakes. Even with the Standard Pads, they are brilliant.
It's funny, that you can have an AU Falcon with a 220Kw V8, that weighs about 1.6-1.7T and has smaller brakes than an NC, and that meets the regulations... You can't use common sense with Authorities in Regards to regulations. They have to check if 1 + 1 really does = 2.

Victoria accepts the im240 test for individually constructed vehicles.

The main difference between euro2 and 3 was the -7 deg.C ambient test. This is the same as the 20deg.C ambient test except the toxic gas limits are higher. The authorities you where working with may have been simplifying there test requirements (not all facilities can test at -7) to be more customer freindly.

One thing that has been lost on all the authorised assessors I am aware of is that all ADR's relating to exhaust emissions state that the vehicle is required to comply for the first 80,000km (the defined life of the car). This means that older vehicles may fail their relevant test even if left standard. However, these authorities insist that if these older vehicles are modified, they should be retested for exhaust emissions.

I thought they were ditching the brake tests as it was deemed to be not practicable to expect people to do it.

Hi guys, i've just wrote a quick update on a tuning issue I've been experiencing involving Dynotronics & TDR tunes conflicting. http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=54890&p=693083#p693083
