Michael's '93 NA Limited Edition
Hey guys,
I'm new to the MX5 scene, and in fact to Brisbane. I just moved here from Hobart to start work as a solicitor in the CBD, and I've only ever owned Toyotas (AW11 MR2, SW20 MR2, TT Soarer, and KE55 coupe respectively), so this is a big jump in many ways.
I've always had a soft spot for the NA, and when I came across Grant's (username mxfive) neat 93 NA for sale I couldn't resist checking it out. One drive and I was sold. For those of you on here who aren't familiar with the car, it's a 1993 limited edition, red with hardtop, tan leather interior, original Nardi Torino wheel, BBS rims, and a few other extras over and above the base NA offered here in '93. Grant had kept it fairly original, but had fitted a 7" DVD/nav/IPod/usb touchscreen and some Boston Acoustic coaxials (what AWESOME speakers by the way), custom rollbar with modplate and cert, and the car has been maintained by MX5Plus at Aspley.
Normally at this early stage of ownership I'd be going nuts modding the life out of it, as I have done with my past 4 cars (my black MR2 for example I imported in 2006 at the conclusion of the 15-year-rule, stock as a rock, ended up with 200rwkw and entered in every show and shine event possible - MISTA2 plates). I am however very content with the way the MX5 is now, and I can appreciate its rarity and heritage.
The only mods I'd be looking at in the near future are some Rota grids, coilovers, front lip, aftermarket towhooks, and offset number plate bracket (already purchased). Keep it simple, stanced, clean.
It was neat when I picked it up, reflective of the amount of effort Grant had put into it, but being the fastidious owner I am, it has been undergoing some serious TLC. The biggest item on my agenda is bringing the almost-20-year-old paint up to its former glory. I did a bit of detailing when I was at Uni as several mates are spraypainters / panelbeaters / detailers, so this weekend I'll grab myself a buffer, cutting compound, and polish
Looking forward to getting involved in some cruises / twisties and trackdays!

Re: Michael's '93 NA Limited Edition
Tonight I gave it a damn good going over, much needed.
Sitting pretty at Westfield Chermside next to a JZA80
The interior after I armoralled the trim, cleaned and conditioned the leather, and replaced the shift boot new shift knob, handbrake boot, and drift button on the way.
Something for a future track day
And my favourite part of detailing - Autosol metal polish. The most incredible product known to man. My doorhandles and hardtop latches got the once over, but the scuff panels came up incredibly.
Before:
After:
Mirror finish
Now I play the waiting game for my first few mods to arrive, but for now I will keep enjoying the car for what it is.
Cheers Scotty. I am very happy with the purchase, even if my ownership might be short-lived (I ordered a Toyota 86 GTS back in July but I still have to wait 17 months!) I've gotta say I still miss my old SW20, and DAMN it was fast, but after 20-odd grand worth of mods, it would want to be:
Save for the horrid chromies, later replaced with SSR professors, it was a mad ride.
Bang for buck, the NA6 is incredible. Looking forward to getting more out of it

Re: Michael's '93 NA Limited Edition
A few more little things this afternoon:
Fitted an offset number plate bracket from omgpham. Nice touch and really opens up the front end a bit. Unfortunately the stock front bar had taken a few beatings from the stock one, which had protruded back in many a time no doubt:
Removed the K&N pod the previous owner had fitted - personal choice, but in my experience a stock airbox with a decent filter performs more effectively than a pod which seems to suck in hot air straight from the engine bay. Picked up a new gasket and filter, and dropped it in:
And a rising sun / NA decal from omgpham:

I was thinking that - the carpet is worn through next to the clutch pedal, I don't know why there were never any mats to begin with. I've seen some custom fitted jobbies on EBay - can anybody comment as to how good these are?
Otherwise some generic Supercheap $20 mats will do for now - better than further wearing the carpet out!
Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Re: Michael's '93 NA Limited Edition
So my car has a half-fitted Robbins soft top - an incomplete job, which I was aware of upon purchase. With summer fast approaching I need to look at getting this properly fitted, but due to the nature of work I am unable to get it anywhere to do so during the week, and it's not something I'm prepared to tackle myself.
Does anybody know of a workshop (or a private individual if they have some notable experience) in the Brisbane area who is experienced in fitting NA/NB soft tops and is available to do so of a weekend?

Most auto trim places should be able to do it, though you might have trouble finding one that's open on the weekend. If you're lucky a forum member might be able to help you out.

Thanks mate, I will definitely look into them. Here's hoping they're open on Saturday! Either way, I'm in Clayfield, so not far from Albion! The boys at MX5 Plus also put me on to Kedron Motor Trimmers who are apparently open on Saturdays also, so I'll weigh up my options!

Re: Michael's '93 NA Limited Edition
So I'm having major troubles with my drivers side indicators (all of them). They don't light up at all, and the ticker is going crazy (but no flashing light on the cluster)
I thought it was the notorious flasher unit relay problem, but I bought a replacement from MX5plus to no avail.
Does anybody else know what might have caused this problem?

Have you checked the wiring for damaged wires causing shorts, I'd also check globes and fuses before taking the dash out!
So lets go!

Checked all fuses, globes, etc. Luckily I ended up throwing in the towel and pulling the dash / footwell area apart.
Of all things it ended up being a wire that had worn itself right through. A bunch of wires were all cable tied together very tightly, and the unit was left swinging. My guess is it wore through eventually - I have no idea how, but the wire was split right where the cable tie was.
A bit of solder and patience and all was good
