NC Seatbelt retractor

Postby SilvRFoxX » Wed Oct 03, 2012 8:44 pm

Tried searching on the topic apologies if it has come up before. I have recently added and NC to the garage and it needs a few tweaks to bring it back to factory, the seatbelt retractor appears to be a bit tired and the belts sit loose.

Any tips on what needs to be done to fix..?

Thanks in advance

It is a very common problem with NCs, and from talking to other NC owners, seems to happen to all the NC1s eventually. I have that issue with both seat belts in my NC1. Not sure have prevalent it is with NC2s.

Some people have reported that the problem can be reduced by modifying the selt-belt guide on the seat to have less friction with the belt. An internet search will soon turn up these stories.

The only sure cure that I know of is to replace the seat belt assembly with a new unit. I haven't bothered costing it, as I assume it will be very expensive for the part.

Other than that, just get used to feeding the belt back in manually. Thats what I do.

There is a new version of the feeder that is fixed to the seat which is supposed to fix the problem.
Actually saw one on Ebay I think from .MX5 plus
Search Ebay for NC MX 5 and scroll through

I'm not sure a new feeder would help, there doesn't seem to be any force coming from the spool at least on mine.

MX5 parts in UK sells complete units but the price is hard to swallow. Wouldn't be surprised if they're illegal anyway if they're missing some sort of ADR label, even if its the same unit (eg like helmets etc)

The replacement feeder just reduces friction on the belt, and won't necessarily fix the problem.
Suggest removing the belt from the feeder (I called it a guide) on the seat, and see if it will then retract.
If so, a modified feeder may help.
In my car, it still wouldn't retract.

Deckspeed is stripping a car for race use. They may have a decent retractor

Seatbelt retractors on my NC2 are sluggish. I don't think the issue was completely fixed on the NC2, even with the improved guides.

There's a couple Service Bulletins on this that are worth a look.

Replacing shoulder belt guides with the new improved version fixed the retraction issues on my car.

MZNH18-88-1L702 GUIDE [R] BELT SEAT $24.72+GST; and
MZNH18-88-1M702 GUIDE [L] BELT SEAT $24.84+GST

Yes, different price for left and right. Mine were fixed under warranty.

This company in Perth might be worth a try. http://www.seatbeltsolutions.com.au/services.asp

I haven't used them yet. They specialise in webbing replacement but when I spoke to them a couple of years ago they said that sometimes they free up inertia reels as part of the job. At the very least they were helpful on the phone.

I would still recommend extracting the seat belt from the guide, and seeing if it then retracts ok.
If not, then replacing the guides will achieve nothing,
