Daytime running lights - super bright LEDS

The light they emit is NOT blue. Only an idiot would run blue leds/lights.

there is no chance that a blue light as a headlamp is legal or passes ADR however we do see differences in range eg some HID lights have that bluish tinge. If people do choose to use blue lights or other non legals they are taking a risk of an unroadworthy sticker or a fine which seems a bit of waste of money.

Just before everybody gets all het up about it, I am talking about one itty bitty led in the park lamp.
Less than one watt, I guess.

Seriously surprised as to why it's all a big deal. Blueish park lights would look good. Blue fog lights too problematic.

The head lamps would not be touched.

Still illegal, BLue lights are for emergency vehicles.

Doesn't matter if it's a 5w bulb, or a 500w bulb, hell, it doesn't even matter if it's a candle behind a blue lens.



You can get parkers that emit a white light (or even a slight white/blue light) which should be legal.
They'll also have a bonus of the car not looking like a P Plater's clapped out hand-me-down commodore

P.S. It's sad to think that as such a small nation (Population wise), we are governed by so many different sets of rules .
I have just purchased a kit, including auto on/off (less the hassle of building a circuit) and the packaging makes a vague reference to the reg's ,the Police Officer that I spoke with on Saturday morning knew little about the laws, beyond the fact that I was in breach because I was using fog lamps and parking lights as DRL's.

Brief update. I am not happy with the size of the lamp bodies, 190mm X 26mm, 5 X 1 watt LED's (they will be OK on my ute) so I am shopping for something else and will post details as soon as I find a suitable replacement. Strips are looking good ATM and they are available with horizontal aim.

the Philips units are very good- they call them Daylight 4 etc- but not cheap- Bursons carry them but a trade order would be the way to go. There really is quite a difference on the quality of drls. If you look at say OEM on Mercedes (and BMW) the lights look very clean designs and very conspicuous whereas some aftermarket units just do not give a good light.The size of the lamp is not a big issue ie the output is. I personally think some of the OEM lights like the HSV's and Audi are just tacky- they look like Xmas tree lights. The Philips units had a video of installation and as a light source maker they have a good reputation.

The MX5 UK product is very expensive If you can accomodate a good small standalone LEd unit then you do not have to buy another set of fogs when they are already on the car. I am not even sure if the replacement fog lamp is not smaller- and smaller is going to affect light output. The grille opening should be wide enough??

Incidientally the Philips product is now available at a very reasonable price off the net - the landed price is about half the local price and its from a serious manufacturer. i reckon it will be certainty Mazda will add a dril in the future. .

If you search for Philips Daylight 4 and then look for Powerbulbs ( UK based) it will probably give you a price AUD with free delivery. Powerbulbs seem to be a proper agent for Philips and Osram products. You can also readily find a video regarding fitment of these units. I have ordered a set and firmly believe that drls are a real safety feature for our hard to see cars.

Thanks for the information, I am with you regarding the safety factor, hence my endeavours. I have an NC2 and I am a little concerned about where to mount the lighting units which is the reason for my ongoing search, I do like the look of the Philips product, they are similar to the ones that I have purchased, albeit a little smaller (mine are 190mmX26mm), at this time I am considering a flexable strip on a bracket inside the lower intake or the units that I have and mounting them on the air dams in front of the wheels where they will be a little more exposed.

A little off topic, but I have replaced the wedge type globes in my parkers (front) and No. plate lights with LED's and until now have not been able to locate replacement wedge (16mm base) type LED's for the tail and stop etc, check this http://www.hero-ledstore.com/
They have a stack of neat stuff, replacement LED's for indicators may require the installation of a load resistor or a flasher cam to suit (Jaycar). Replacing the brake lights will afford extra warning for following vehicles ( I have misplaced my calculations but at 100 kph I think that it is around 5 metres), the illumination is almost instantainious because the LED does not rely on heat to glow.

I haven't read the entire post but just putting mt 5c worth - it is actually a legal requirement in some countries (eg: Israel) to have your headlights on ALL the time - day or night for visibility purposes
