Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
In an earlier post I mentioned adding some lighting to the ignition switch.
I had a bayonet fit LED sitting around doing nothing that was removed from a rather odd device that was fitted in the dash in place of the cigarette lighter when I got the car.
I drilled a 10mm hole in the plastic steering column cover above the ignition switch and pushed the LED in to place. The hole was drilled so that it is a tight push in fitting. I soldered 2 wires to the connections on the LED and then connected these wires in line to the respective wires on the dash light fade switch as these were easily accessible. I fitted a dual pin connector in-line so that the light can be unplugged and the cover can be removed easily.
The fitting:
The result:

Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
Got home yesterday to find these waiting:
Couldn't wait to fit them this morning.
I figured the front was going to be the hardest, so get that out of the way first. There are three bolts holding the old tie down hooks in place. Mine weren't too tight thankfully. One bolt (where my spanner is in the photo) is awkward to get to. If your's is really tight, you may have some extra dismantling involved for better access to this bolt.
I ended up removing the bumper brace you can see here for easier access ...
Once all bolts removed, just pull the tie hook through the back.
Old vs new:
Next, using the bolts supplied, I placed the new hook in position. The two outside bolts are easy to thread, but the inner bolt was a complete PITA! Of course, I dropped it (twice) in to the undertray So at that point I decided further action was required. The plastic cover thingy that was in the way looked like too much hassle to remove, so with a stanley knife, I just cut away some of the plastic to allow better access:
Wow! did that make life easier!!
Front fitted:
On to the back.
Easy access here. Two nuts, two bolts. Once again mine were not too tight. Replace the two nuts, these hold the bumper & other parts.
Old vs new:
The tow hook is height adjustable, so will also fit with rear lips, so now just a matter of placing it where you want it & fitting the two supplied bolts.
Finished:
Much better ....
I also removed the other two hooks as these looked completely weird with the Ryoku hooks fitted.
BTW...the four old tie hooks weighed in at 4kg on our old bathroom scales!! I was too keen to fit the new Ryoku's to think of weighing them but they weren't as heavy as the originals that's for sure.

Very pretty, what are the 3 holes drilled into the front one for? Seems like it would weaken it.

Yeah, no idea what they are for. I am not sure of the strength compared to others available, but I have seen photos of a test done jacking the car on the hooks and they held up fine. Of course, we all jack cars up on tow hooks
In all honest, the original hooks that came off actually felt stronger, but I think that's only due to their extra weight.
They do look so much nicer though

Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
A "result of efforts" update to the build ...
Well ... my wife had a couple of weeks holiday. We'd organised a week in the Clare Valley (SA) as we haven't been there in over 25 years! Beautiful scenery, interesting history ... and wineries! We aren't really Riesling drinkers which is what the area is famous for, we both prefer red wines, so we'd already decided we probably wouldn't be buying much to bring back, though there are a couple of reds from the area we like, so maybe one or two ...
Anyway, with Mexie pretty much in good shape now, I mentioned that with pretty good weather forecast for the area, it might be a good chance to give the girl a real test out and see how we felt touring with her for a week. My wife was real keen and enthusiastic! Loved the idea of a week of topless touring. Me? ... I was nervous
Decision made, the first challenge came after we finished packing our suitcase, took it out to the car ... and ... it wouldn't fit !! Boot is smaller than I thought ... DOH!! So began a search for other suitcases hidden around the house, in the caravan, in the shed ... working out which suitcase would fit! I was determined to leave the spare wheel in place as well as take a small emergency tool kit, so this was becoming a bit irritating. Finally after we had tried a few and found one suitcase and a soft bag that fitted in, we then had to reduce the half house we were use to packing in the back of my Tarago, to a week's essentials only. Love my wife, not one complaint the whole time.
So who said MX5's were impractical? The end result of some careful packing of a week's items looked like this:
Ready to go
After a horrible drive through the endless South Road roadworks we finally hit the open road and started to relax ... until about 2 hours in a couple of rain showers suddenly hit lol. Yup, roof was down, it was raining ... and we laughed our heads off. I said we'd get soaked if I stopped to put the roof up as the rain was going over our heads while I kept driving, so we decided to keep going. The only water that eventually made it's way in came over the side windows blown in sideways! Apart from that we went through a few showers during the drive to Clare and it was fine Very different!
Arrived at the Motel - hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but have to give a plug to the Clare Valley Motel after a lovely stay. Such a comfortable place and such nice friendly owners and staff that I have to give them a mention.
Travelled about 800+ kms during the week mostly top down and not too many issues. One very frustrating issue after all my work on the dash lighting - drove to a restaurant one night and lost half the instrument panel lights! Three of the new LED's had blown in one day!! Not happy!! So next day quick walk to town to pick up some new globes and quickly fitted them in. Just ordinary Narva T10 5 watters fitted without the green condoms and actually ended up looking quite good! Actually brighter than the LED's and better coverage but not the clean white look. More to come on some changes I'm trying with the lighting over the next week so stay tuned ...
The only other issue, which doesn't show up as dramatic as it is in reality in the following photo ...
Those marks are actually reasonable dents - about 3 dents and 5 deepish scratches on my driver's side door
That's what happens when a panicked cat runs flatout across the road in to the side of the car!! Luckily I was only doing 50km/h at the time. I had a car up my rear at the time so couldn't brake or swerve much. My wife had seen it running full pelt from a garden the other side of the road and yelled out, but I only saw it as it came within a couple of feet of the front of the car. I swerved a little to the left and missed hitting it front on, but it was running so fast it still hit my door flat out. Huge bang!! Must be dead! Nup!! looked in my side mirror to see it just miss the car behind me running back the way it had come! So looks like I'll be trying out the "hair dryer, can of air" Youtube dent removal method Look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about, quite fascinating.
Trip home bought about another challenge ... fitting these in ...
Yeah so much for not buying much wine haha .. $800 poorer and about 3doz to find space for. Back shelf became handy for about a dozen, then the suitcase emptied and the remaining bottles carefully placed in there and the clothing pushed in loosely to the small gaps around the boot lol.
Oh yeah, and regarding any comments about MX5 drivers being obsessed ... nah ... just 'cause she got cleaned nearly every afternoon when we returned to the Motel during the week
Final thoughts on our first effort touring in Mexie? Great...bloody fantastic! We both loved it! Can't believe the amount of attention the car got!! Every place we stopped someone would come up and start talking to me about the car. Easy way of making friends lol!!
Another great thing about touring in Mexie? On our way home drove past a sign. Quick u-turn and this is where we spent an unexpected afternoon:
Collingrove Hill Climb was on!!! Never been there before!
Best thing? Met up with Marque from the MX5 Car Club SA who was racing his NA:
Many, many thanks to Marque for all the info about racing and the SA MX5 Club and even more so for the fantastic passenger experience up the climb!!!! WOW!!!! Awesome fun!
Maybe not now, but am pretty certain that Mexie will be hitting that hill at a "come 'n try" day in the future sometime and who knows where from there

Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
OK ... MX5 holiday update out the way we arrived home from Clare to find these had arrived from the USA ...
Not the real deal, they are eBay items, seller named AdvanceTuning. Great guy, great service and very patient. He did heaps to get them here after I completely stuffed up the whole process at one stage and received a full refund from him After we sorted out my stuff up, he even offered me $20 discount!! I paid for them again, saving the $20 as well as getting a better exchange rate than my original purchase and 7 days later they arrived at my door!!! 7 Days from USA!!
They look pretty good for cheap eBay lips. The "main" USA sellers of the "real" items stuffed me around heaps regarding their freight costs to Australia, using all sorts of excuses about carton sizes and quoting ridiculous prices! This guy had them here USPS Priority in 7 days for US$80 freight cost in a full size carton without any issues and without bending the lips at all!!
Anyway, did a quick test fit & all looks good, so when I get time over the next couple of weeks the front lip should be in. Not sure yet if fitting the rear. Purchased it anyway as didn't affect freight cost! But the thought of cutting the lip, or cutting my mud flaps doesn't really appeal.
Also sometime this week I should receive my Brown Davis Roll Bar. Paid more than I wanted for it on eBay, but having recently missed out on a couple of MX5Plus bars and a BD bar on the Forum and on eBay I was determined to finally get something

Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
BTW just a quicky, here's a couple comparison shots of the White LED instrument lights vs the Narva filament bulbs without condoms:
White LED 5 watt (equiv) - less brightness, uneven light spread (not as bad as photo makes it appear), sharp bright whites:
Narva 5 watt naked - much brighter, even light spread, but the needles & odo's are an amber colour. Actually looks ok, but I will be trying some different filament bulbs soon (lost faith in LED's) to try to bring back the white appearance:

Re: Mexie & Kev say hello
Well, after much indecision, I decided that I'd fit the rear OEM style lip and see what it looked like.
Very easy to fit this one! I have rear mud flaps fitted so I had to remove those first. The rear bumper is already marked where to drill, so after aligning my lips & checking that everything lined up with the marks, I proceeded to drill all the holes & bolt the two part lip on.
Hmmm .... stood back ... didn't like it As my car is not lowered and has only stock wheels/tyres, removing the mud flaps had accentuated the gap in the rear guards, so it looked like I'd raised the back of the car a couple of inches!
From directly behind, the affect wasn't quite so bad, but I still wasn't happy with the look.
So with a bit of searching online I found some detailed photos & instructions on cutting the rear flaps to fit the lips on MX-5Miata.net - Here's a link for anyone interested: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.ph ... p+mudflaps
One thing to be careful of is that not all mud flaps & lips are identical, so only use these instructions as a rough guide. Don't go completely by the template! But the photos etc on there really helped.
Cutting in to the first flap was nerve wracking! These mud flaps were purchased brand new from MX5Parts (UK) not that long ago! Anyway, very slowly I cut a little bit at a time, test fitted, cut some more, test fitted and so on.
First side fitted:
Wasn't quite as neat as hoped, but I am pretty happy with the result. Coffee & donut break, then on to the next side with a bit more confidence & knowledge ...
Overall effect from most angles and from behind... so much better ...
Now to just leave it and get use to the completely new look of the car. She looks more squat from different angles, especiall from the front, despite no alteration to the ride height. I'll also be interested to see if some of the comments I've read on other forums regarding these rear lips acting like a parachute are true ....

Saw this thread when you first made it and happy to see you're still keeping us updated, doing a great job Kev!
Do you have no interest in getting coilovers/stiffer springs in your ride or is budget just the issue? I dropped a couple hundred on some and was immediately happy with how well they make the 5 feel.
