I rang them today to ask if they had any 82 load rated KU31 tyres and they said no, but said "81 is fine, who looks at that number anyway".
Even if it doesn't cause issues I bet your insurers care if you have a nasty stack!

Re: Cheap new Kumho KU31's
Good pick up about the 81 rating on web site guys, but a bit of research on Kumho site shows195/50 15 KU31's don't come in 81 load rating:? I just checked the tyres I bought off them and they are definitely 82 V rated so I'd suggest it's a typo on the tyre mobs site.
I'd also say the numpty on the phone was too lazy to check specs and going by the below, I don't see how 81 rated tyres would really be an issue anyway considering the curb weight of the MX5 plus 2 hefty passengers and a bit of luggage still comes in way less than the combined max load rating.
Passenger car tyre load ratings
Load Index 81 82 85 86 87 88 90 92 95 96
Max Load/tyre (kg) 462 475 515 530 545 560 600 630 690 710
I'm not trying to be smart with the above, but you're probably right about the insurers being anal over tyre load ratings, so it does pay to make sure everything is legal.

Re: Cheap new Kumho KU31's
i ordered sunday and had them delivered to Adelaide today which is pretty good. I'm not sure who you rang but mine are made in vietnam and have a 82V load rating. For those worried about insurance, a 195/50 tyre isnt legal on a 8 inch wide rim anyway.

195/50R15 KU31 are made in Vietnam. Was a thread about this over a year ago.vrmmmpshhh wrote:i ordered sunday and had them delivered to Adelaide today which is pretty good. And yup 82 is the load rating for this tyre.
195/50R15 on and 15x8 rims may not be legal in S.A. But best not give out legal advice if you don't know the other states rules.

Re: Cheap new Kumho KU31's
BJ1, they turned up today with an 82V rating though.
As for fitment, my understanding was that if the tire manufactuer doesn't recommend them to be run on a 8 inch rim...they aren't legal. according to Kuhmo, the maximum width rim these tires can be fitted to is a 7.0 inch rim...
So i think even if DOT didn't pick it up, and you had an accident, you would still be screwed.
Interstingly a 205/50/15 and 205/45/16 max is stated at 7.5 inch
but a 205/40/16 is 8 inch.

i think you'll find 195/50r15 are only legal on 7inch wide wheels no matter where you are in Australia. tyre fitter can actually get in trouble for stretching tyres if you get in an accident which is why many of the chain stores wont do it.

the 1.6 need a 82 load rating. 1.8 and 2.0 need a 84 load rating.sailaholic wrote:BJ1, they turned up today with an 82V rating though.

Cheers, so they are underrated bummer. Will have to watch out for that in future.
