Supercharged NC Emissions PASSED

Postby neilhr » Wed Sep 26, 2012 11:35 pm

Big thanks to Jay at TDR Tuning and Chris at Targa Racing in Australia. We have now made a big step forward in making my supercharged NC legal in New South Wales. My car had to comply with the Euro 2 Emissions test. The test was conducted on 24 September 2012 at the Penrith Motor Registry and comfortably passed on the first attempt. This milestone will soon make my supercharged NC the first and only legally registered and insured MX5 NC in Australia! Next up will involve a brake test which will be conducted before the end of the year.

If any Aussies are thinking about forced induction for their NCs. Please talk to David at MX5 Mania.

and incase anyone missed it, here is the report I wrote on what I've been through with my SC'd NC: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showpost.php? ... stcount=38

and finally if you are keen to follow my car's progress go to http://ggroadster.net

Stay Tuned!

The fastest, legal barge in Australia! Very happy for you despite my obvious sarcasm.

Congratulations Neil!!!

Euro 2??? Does that requirement apply to all NCs or do later models need to meet Euro 3 (or higher)?

Thanks Bryan!

Sorry Not sure on the specifics but unfortunately the later the model the stricter the emission limits. So a 2012 model might be under Euro 3 or 4. Chris Gough may know more of the specifics

Later models will be required to pass Euro 3 or 4, Chris is working on getting the cars passed WITH aftermarket exhaust also.

Emissions standards are getting harder and harder!! That said we were able to achieve results that easily meet Euro 2 and 3.
Euro 4 and 5 are a little more difficult as the CO readings are less than half of whats allowed under Euro 3. We easily meet 4 and 5 with THC and NOx and I'm confident we can also get within the CO limits as the later engines had a couple of little changes that satisfied the Euro std's.

Either way its now full steam ahead with the supercharged NC's and stay tuned for many other exciting developments

Page 2 of this PDF has shows adoption dates for each standard. Although I'm confused why my late 2006 model is classified as Euro 2 when it says, 'Euro 2 adopted in ADR79/00 from 1/1/03 to 1/1/04'.

Thanks Chris. I thought that's how it'd work and just thought it worth highlighting to prospective superchargees. 8) Euro 2 was required in Australia on all cars from 1st Jan 2004. Euro 3 was required for models first produced on or after 1st Jan 2005 ... which is a bit puzzling why you guys got away with only Euro 2 compliance. However, the CO emissions for Euro 2 and Euro 3 are almost the same (NOx and HC are lower for Euro 3). Euro 4 kicks in from July 2010 for existing models and CO emissions drop from 2.3g/km to 1.0g/km. So all NC1s and early NC2s (to Jun 2010) should only need Euro 3, but late model NC2s (from Jul 2010) would need Euro 4. Euro 5 doesn't start for new models until Nov 2013 - it'll be interesting to see if the ND arrives before that. That's my reading of the emission standards anyway.

thanks for clearing that up guys.

Tim's (Zohxoco) 2005 NC had tried the emissions test about a month ago at the Mascot registry and was also classified under 'Euro 2'.

Was a logging of the AFR (air/fuel ratio) done as well?

There's somewhat of a disagreement with people regarding the tune on the ECU by whoever does the charger kits.

there was no data logging during the emissions test.

Afr and fuel trims are very good on the TDR tune. My car was running very lean on the Dynotronics tune.
