As a former salesman for the old race and rally at greenacre, my saying was 50 dollar helmet for a 50 dollar head. Still sold plenty of 50 dollar helmets :roll:

I raced Motocross and Supercross for too long to realize that safety equipment is bloody expensive until you need it.

I have 2 outfits:
Simpson X-Bandit Helmet
RPM Racegear triple layer suit
RPM gloves /Simpson Baja race boots

Simpson Superbandit helmet
RPM Racegear 2 layer suit
Simpson gloves and boots (above)

#1 cost me nothing due to sponsorship but #2 I paid cash for. I don't want to test the fire proofing abilities of either

I got a balaclava and socks cheap off a ebay seller for karts.

As I understand the bike helmets are designed for impacts so are heavier, plus the fire protection is significantly weaker being that your not enclosed on a bike and potentially exposed to fire at all. I'm planning on getting a new helmet soon but I'll go to Steves speed or Revo... I tried on like 8 helmets ranging from $200-$500 and only 2 of them fit well....

I have recently purchased a new Arai "Vector II" motorcycle helmet, light weight hand laid fibreglass, removable liner, great optics and excellent peripheral vision. It will easily accomodate my Ray Ban wayfarers and is 'D' ring secured, the venting system is more than adequate and includes a one touch de-fog system, it is very quiet and comfortable. Whilst my primary use is on the bike I would not hesitate to recommend this helmet for use in a car, the only draw back for some may be cost, plain colours RRP $560.00 and colours $660.00.

P.S. This helmet was purchased to replace one that was stolen (secured to the bike/ strap cut) whilst my partner and I were visiting Melbourne, the frustration of being 200 klms from home with an ill fitting helmet and no gloves at 8.30pm at night made for a cranky ride home worrying myself sick about her safety, not on the train, but waiting at Castlemaine station at 10.30pm whilst I pushed on to get a car and returned to pick her up. BASTARDS.

I'm curious about how this works.

My helmet always fogs up, even though I have all the vents open, and it's got a breath deflector thing that sticks up in front of the nose.

It's so bad that I can't use it unless I have the visor open, or off. (granted, it's a cheap ORX or something so probably doesn't have the most efficient venting)

Hi Nick,
Apologies, I have only just seen your response. The visor is fitted with a catch operated by ones left thumb that only allows it to open about two or three mm. I wonder weather there would be enough air movement for it to work inside the car but you can try just 'cracking' the visor open and see how it goes, as the catch is only to stop the visor from busting open at speed. There are some very good anti-fog products and I would suggest a visit to a motorcycle outlet to see what is available.

I should have updated this thread.

I have now got an OMP Dynamo 2 layer suit. This was on sale at Demon Tweeks and was $600 including 1 week freight from the UK. Looks exacty like this:

I also bought pyrovatex underwear top and bottoms from Revolution Racegear for $160. I did have a look and feel at the latest moisture wicking, lightweight, cooling, Nomex stuff which is very thin and light but still has the same properties as the knitted Nomex but alas it is $200 for the top alone.

While I was there I got a pair of RPM branded FIA approved boots for $200.

So it has not been a cheap thing to do but I am actually more comfortable once I am buried in my seat and belted in. T-shirts and jeans are uncomfortable. Importantly I am also much safer!

Its a relatively new website, but offer some great discounts.

As for helmets i have a bell helmet but never use it because i like my bike helmet. Its a $2500 shark its light, made of carbon kevlar. One of the safest on the market. The only problem is they don't use fire proofing on the inside. You can get around this by wearing a nomex balaclava. I hate cheap helmets, Ive seen what happens on a bike when its rider hits a telegraph pole at 60kms

. Since that day its only the best for me!!!!. If u cant afford a decent helmet you cant afford to go on track is my personal opinion.

Shark also offer cheaper models around $300 made of the same composite as the top. Also most manufacturers of helmets dont tell the consumer what there made out of. Shark DO!!

Paid one day delivered the next, didn't pay much either!
Upon further research, it's actually IKD (official Sparco distributor) operating a separate online company or something.
I'll be picking up a sparco suede steering wheel and some sparco leisure shoes soon...

I'm rocking a fireproof lined fiberglass helmet... Old erg stock. Not pretty, but a lot better than the cheap open face one I was using before that. My first helmet was a sparco circuit I think but the foam is goneskis and the lining is separating from around the visor... Loved that helmet, nice and light carbon Kevlar mix. Was awesome.

I'd be very surprised if this works in a car. They aren't that effective on a bike when you're going hard and the heart rate is up.
Best investment is a $30 visor insert from any bike shop. They do not fog at all. You can even get them in different tints but personally I'd change the visor if I wanted tint as you can only stick the inserts once and they'll stay in place and working for years.
