Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Avo kit is pretty comprehensive. Has pretty much everything you need, including a little piece to reroute the powersteering line i found out when i got the car to mania...... The only thing it lacks is engine management for the kit i ordered although you could option the 5th injector setup but you may as well go a proper computer.
Oh it also lacks any form of instructions at all! So unless your either skilled and knowledgable... Or severely deluded in your own ability but persistant( im more the latter ) id say its probably better to have it installed.
Good news today. Picked up a new set of plugs and it runs again( should of guessed... Any problem that cant be solved by leads is generally solved with plugs)
Bad news is that it belched thick white oilly smoke for a good 10 minutes till it warmed up and then under acceleration so im a little concerned ive either done the rings or diluted the oil with fuel and its getting past the pistons.
Oil change tomorrow night i think and back up to mania this week

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Well cars back from mania today.
And other than a bit of smoke it runs perfectly.
Now i guess its a case of wait and see what happens with the smoke. It may get better or worse. Well see i guess its time to start putting some money away in case its the worst out come

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Well the car still smokes.
Soaked the pistons in subaru upper engine cleaner for 3 hours on sat in case it is a stuck oil ring. No real help.
Changed to a high milage oil with out any change either. Will be changing it back this weekend to a lighter oil
Cars booked in to get a compression and leak down test done this sat morning. So thats pretty much the be all and end all.
Theres only one other thing i can think of at this point that may be causing smoke and thats to much oil pressure to the turbo
The feed line is connected via a banjo bolt and i dont remember seeing anything in the kit that looked like a seperate oil line restrictor. But i vaguely remember the banjo bolt to not be overly restrictive
So on the off chance the compression etc comes back clean id say its got to be that. So fingers crossed. It would fit symptoms and that it only started to smoke when the turbo went on

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Was it the full AVO kit?
That should have been supplied with all of the appropriate feeds etc for the turbo - the one's I've worked with in the past have been.

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Yeah it was the full avo kit.
Spoke to lee at avo and they dont supply a oil inlet restrictor. Generally they arent deemed neeeded on a mx5
Although miata turbo seems fond of them.
Big and yet confusing news this morning.
Compression results are..... 175psi over all four cylinders ........ farking great news!
However of course now wtf is causing fouled plugs and oil smoke?
Your sudgestions please cos im out of ideas

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
In addition to last post.
Its getting a lot of blow by how ever you can feel the pressure at the oil fill cap so could still be oil control rings or or possibly head gasket blown thru into oil channel?
Going to try and soaking it over night with sh*t loads of subaru upper engine cleaner over night on the pistons and see if that helps.

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
Well im hesitant to say it but the subaru upper engine cleaner cycled with periods of thrashing the sh*t out of the car seems to have actually dislodged the oil rings quite a bit. The car still puffs the occasional bit of white smoke more than an mx5 should but much less than a mitsubishi.
Its still being a bit moody on cold starts but i think that might be the adaptronic settings to an extent and it still runs a little rich under full boost

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
As it turns out. My cold start problems. Seem to have actually been caused by a fuel pump that was on its way out.
Problem solved success
Car isnt really blowing smoke anymore after the subaru engine cleaner soaks either. So all in all pretty good outcome

Re: Psquires 1998 NB8A
yeah really happy so far.
not much else in the way of updates im pretty much just enjoying having a running reliable car again after 2 or so months. and ive promised the (almost ex after the turbo install ) girlfriend that i wont do much else to the car for a while...
hmm havent checked the for sale section in a few hours
next up are small things to increase reliablility further. upgrade to cooling system perhaps oil cooler etc. ill probably try and steer clear of more performance mods for a while until im certain that the engines calmed down about after the tantrum it threw about having the turbo installed
