Personal choice!!

Most would just love to go faster, some of us are not mechanically minded but that shouldn't stop us at all!!

I'd love to be another 3-4 secs a lap faster, maybe just a few 'add-ons' will do that plus another bottle of 'brave juice'!

Was a Lakeside yesterday and saw 'cubic dollars' that had been spent sitting beside 'budget racing' by way of Hyundai Excels and funny, 90% of those Excels would be FASTER than my NB!!

Bottom line is have fun no matter what, some love to win and some love just to compete!

Totally agree. Just sometimes bugs me to see folks use "depth-of-wallet" as way to achieve acclaim for lap times.

Perhaps I'm being too green (both in terms of a noob yet to gain better driving skills and as someone envious of the mods others are able to justify/afford on their cars).

I'll stick to just having fun then 8)

U got it!! That's when the fun starts!!

We all do mods to make our cars the way we like, 'track' isn't the only thing we use them for and performancee is always nice to have, if I get around to it then extractors and cold air, maybe full stainless steel exhaust, that's enough - I run out of top speed on the main straight at Lakeside so have to try and make it up thru the corners!!

If you get to make it, look forward to you and 53 neck and neck for fastest time of the day!! No matter what, always a pleasure to watch both of the 'red rockets' !!

Should be good.. i dont think ill come out if its raining though.. i dont have much left on these rs3's so it will be to sketchy lol :P fingers crossed though..

i think mine and his cars are more or less about the same as far as modifying goes.. like he went to a bigger motor and cams to get power.. i went for turbo. He has a lot better suspension and bracing then me with his ohlins and the countless number of braces he has. i have leaking bc coilovers, fender braces and a basic 4 pt roll bar lol. It should be interesting.

Two different approaches to going quick. I will go through the corners quicker and start the straights faster. Charlie will be much quicker down the straights having much more power and will make up for being a bit slower in the corners. Our times should be very close looking forward to the day. If its raining I should be a fair bit quicker though.

One thing is for sure - you both spent silly amounts of $$$ with folks to get faster around the track. Will be keen to see how much more that is vs stock SE/SP and others....

Time/$ would be a good measure and something that maybe the MX5 club could introduce in the track days. Would encourage driver skill beyond just throwing down crazy cash and would reward DIY engineering vs I paid someone to make me quicker.

Thoughts??

For the record. buying my car and all the mods have cost lest than a new MX5.

Secondly The mods listed at the bottom of gslenders post were paid for by someone.

Thirdly I have had fun at track days in the past with a stock NA a NA with an M45, and an NA racecar.

Half the fun for me is to pick someone close to you in lap times and to have some friendly competition. You can do that anywhere in the pack from slowest to fastest and on any budget.

I've just started taking my car to the track this year and this is exactly what I think too - no point in looking at the top guys and hoping I can be competitive with them (but one day maybe!)

I'm actually blown away by how quick some guys like Neil are in a N/A car, they clearly demonstrate that driving ability wins over sheer horsepower and make me wish I'd started tracking my car before I deemed it to be "track-ready".

Lokiel

Prime example is 'justabitrusty', while the car has the right suspension, wheels and tyres the engine as far as I'm aware is total stock and yet he does Lakeside in 62's, that's called 'driver ability' - until you get that, you're not in the race!!

What I like is seeing what others have done to improve their cars, and remember 95% use them for more than 'track', so if you have the $$$$ then have fun!! Mine has a stock engine so any improvement has to come from my ability, I will never take out 'fastest time of the day' BUT, should it rain? hmmmm!! It becomes a level playing field

I would finish each meet with maybe 60% of the field in front of me for lap times but my fun is competing against others in my class like Ross, we manage to be at times 2/100th of a second apart so it's always 'game on'!!

The only improvements I have in mind are 'cold air', extractors and a new exhaust system, I run out of 'puff' down the main straight at Lakeside!!

Bring on the 17th!!

I think it is natural for people to want to finish the day higher up the time sheet than lower!
But being up the pointy end takes more than just throwing $$$ at the car.
Sure you can take a bog std car to 'Plus' and give them a fat cheque and 6mths and they will produce a very quick car for you.
If thats your thing then go for it!
Or if like many of us, you spend $ on improvements one by one and appreciate the changes.
And it is even more rewarding when you do the research and installation yourself.
Lokiel and I started with Ti 'SE's and apart from cosmetic diferances (lots of Red stuff modds on Simons = Speed) the performance upgrades are extremely similar. The WHP is same, coilovers the same, wheels the same and tyres comparable.
Does that mean we should be driving side by side?
No, because Simon has only just started driving on track. And I have been trying really hard over the last 3yrs to improve my skill level.
I just found a printout, of i think, my first day at Lakeside in May 2009.
My best time was 1.09.27
Since then I have upped the HP, improved rims/tyres/coilovers and brakes $$$
And had another 25ish maybe track events.
Each event has seen my time drop gradually. Now my LS pb is 1.03.48
Doesnt seem like a big enough improvement to justify the $ spent???
But hell, it got me a bunch of trophies last year :D And that is rewarding.
But i dont have any way of calculating how many sec for car and how many sec driver improvement.
The modds certainly give you more confidence to try harder. Then you have to up your skill to handle the extra speed.
Then, if i didnt have to drive the car to work everyday, and interstate holidays, then maybe i would try the 'win it or bin it' attitude and knock some more time off.

Can i still claim car is 'stock' because havent touched the engine, like some others do?

If I didn't have to build my motor is wouldn't. I only upgrade things in my car once I have bought them. At the end of the day it's only really the drivetrain that's been worked on and that's simply because I broke the previous parts.

Other then that it's just add ons. I'm still on stock brakes, still using basic coilovers, barely any bracing and that's it. I wish I didn't have to build my motor but at the end of the day u do it to be more reliable.

I'm going out there to have fun and better my times but as long as I drive home that's all that matters.

You got it Charlie!! I don't have a trailer!!

While it's not my 'daily drive' I respect the car - maybe I can go faster, who knows? But at my age [damn old!!] i'm finding with so many wrinkles half my face is hanging over the boot!!
