How does an NA drive/steer with no PS?

Postby alexpav » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:51 pm

Hey all,

I may be losing my Power steering to make way for the cooler pipes. We will try and keep it all there, but doesnt look like we will be able to.

How does it drive?

Is it heavy when you are stopped? I cant imagine it being to bad when your moving..

Opinions/experiences appreciated.

Cheers
Alex

I prefer it, many do.

If you are above 60kg you will be fine.

Are you thinking of de-powering your PS rack, or swapping it out for NA6 manual steering?

My NA6 has the manual steering rack and I love it. The only other option I would consider is a depowered PS rack for the quicker ratio.

I've dríven a de powered car, the steering is a bit heavier then I would like, definitely needs two hands to chuck it around at slow speeds. Higher speeds it easier and the feedback is awesome.

Be careful of factory manual racks as I believe the rack ends are now discontinued.

might be less fun with wide semi's on the front but i find it great.

then again only 1/8 of my cars have had powersteering so i'm pretty used to it. (insert comment about masturbating here)

We own two NA's; a black V Special with power steering, and a green LE without. At carpark speeds the difference is obviously noticeable. Occasionally I'll notice it when driving at normal suburban speeds. When going for it, I do have to say that I prefer the power steering. However, that's probably just because I'm more used to it.

If you have to drop it, I'm sure you'll be fine.

A de powered rack is harder then a factory manual racks as the ratio is different.

I think flying miata has a guide to de powering.

Some of the yank cars came with an idler, but I can't remember if it was to run ps with no ac or the other way around

You can run ps with no ac - pully required to run ac with no ps

I have a de-powered rack. It is heavy to park, but nothing over the top.

It's more preference than anything.

I find that without power steering the MX5 feels dull and heavy.
It's not difficult to drive without it, it just (to me) made the car lose it's nimble and fun nature.

Non PS NA8 here & happy with it - higher tyre pressures (32PSI cold all around) helps at parking speeds.

Flyin Miata depower guide here along with other interesting PS depower info:
