Re: Dan's NC track toy
Guys, I'm not sure which NC experts we're talking about but T8 and T10 are less than 70km/hr Vmin. There's no way that 3rd is the right gear here ... unless you've got a short diff and small tyres. Or a supercharger!

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Hmmmm, third gear in the fish hook. Unless they have a 4.1 diff and even then it's iffy, the corner is second gear, as is T10.
Basically it's like this :
T1 - flat out 164kph, redline 4th
T2 - 90 - 93 kph, 3rd
T3 - 130 kph, more with balls, 4th
T4 - in the region of 110, I don't have time too look, 3rd
T5 - something less than T4, 3rd
T6 - flat out in third drifting, 3rd
T7 - flat out setting up for braking point, 4th
T8 - 2nd
T9 - in the region of 120 flat in 3rd, 4th as soon as the car is straight
T10 - 2nd then third just as the car straightens.
All above is on R Spec's time in the 1:10 - 1:11's. Drop 2 seconds for road tyres, slight back off for T3 and T9.
Good luck.

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Good point, that was one of my first considerations, there was a slight difference in tyre diameter and compound, all stock FGR though.Hellmun wrote:Make sure if your comparing gear/speeds with other people your both using the same diff ratio, tyre diameter and tyre compound.
We might be speaking to the same people, I can’t see the fishhook being done in 3rd without more power, T2 and T10 I can see as being plausible though (T2 much more than T10).Zohxoco wrote:I am assured by the experts, and I believe them, that the best is to stay in 3rd at these corners. The reason is that they are not as tight as you might think (if you have the right line), but more importantly, the time to shift down and then back up is far more than any slight power you might gain at the lower gear. That said, extra power would help here, in particular I recommend the full GWR exhaust if you haven't got it yet (sorry I haven't been keeping up with your thread).
Some race pads would also make a killer difference. I haven't tried my Carbotechs on the track yet but I definitely believe they will be epic. Not for the street...
Also, tyres. What do you have on? Go for an alignment at Spinning Wheels (talk to Stu), although I didn't notice any difference on the track, it makes street driving much more fun, especially the track alignment
I don’t have any problem with the upshift out of the fishhook, I’m shifting at around the left hand turning section after it, third means I’m completely dead trying to exit.
I haven’t got an Exhaust, just XP10 pads and RBF600 fluid, the seat and harness.
I think I’ll get a PPE header, the gains shown outside of headers hasn’t convinced me it’s worth it and I don’t want a loud car, suspension I might have a go at the Fat Cat’s since I’d like a simple setup that I can’t touch/blame, not planning on changing for a while though since I'm enjoying the stock setup.
As for the Carbotech’s I was really impressed with them, plenty of bite and feel, never really felt any significant fade doing full sessions which was impressive.
On Tyres I’m currently running RE001’s that came with the car, they are fine to practice on but I figure I’ll burn them out, replace them with AD08’s on the stock rims for the track and I’ll grab some FD rims with some Z221’s so I’ll have a Semi’s set too.

I’m not calling people out unless they want to post here, yeh I tend to agree with what you’re saying, that’s what I felt as well.
Need to get your NC out there, would be awesome to see what you can do in it.

Thanks mate, great advice there, you gave me some great advice at EC and you were the contrarian on gear selection (saying second) which I appreciated.
I’m pretty similar to what you’re explaining I think I really need to keep more speed though T2 as I’m not in 4th by T3 yet.
Would love to get a chance to follow you around Wakefield sometime, you seem to have it dialed!

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Ralph and Phil are the gurus of the NC
I would trust them, it's great to see speed/gear differences. Mine are completely different, similar speeds though, but I have more power and different set-ups to pull me out of the corners.
Will you be at EC in late October? A few MX5 drivers inc myself should be attending the Circuit Club day on the 1st of Oct. Your most welcome to join!

Haven't confirmed I'll be there for EC (weekends are harder for me due to social stuff), Sounds like Circuit Club will be a go though
Will confirm I can make it tomorrow and lock it in.

Generally every second session is not timed and passenger runs.
Your welcome to let me drive you around in Regies car, i'm sure he won't mind
Circuit Club provide you with a timing device for Natsoft timing.
The days are similar to SOTS days, you get longer sessions with more track time.

Dan for my two bob - I was lucky enough to have one of the 'fast' nc guys as my instructor as a newbie (he runs at the pointy end in the supersprints) and he was saying t2 & 10 are 2nd gear. His car is N.A.

I don't want to harp on but just to be perfectly clear, Turn 2 is third gear, NOT second gear in the NC. The speed through the turn is in excess of the red line in second gear. As I said in my earlier post, you're doing in excess of 90kph at the slowest point in the corner. If you're in second then you're going too slow.
Dan wrote:I’m pretty similar to what you’re explaining I think I really need to keep more speed though T2 as I’m not in 4th by T3 yet.
Correct. If you're in second at T2 you'll never get to 4th before T3.
Turn 8 (or the Fish Hook) you're down to 65kph and T10 down to 70kph, so these are the only two corners where you use second gear.

You are never harping on when you're dropping gems, it's good advice!
I'm currently entering T2 at around 75km from memory (I was checking as I was near the top of second on the shift and didn't want to over rev the car), far too slow!

Sounds good mate, I've been along to quite a few Wakefield days (Private and SOTS days) but never a CC day, I've only heard good things.

If I went to second my rods would warp , as Charlie said stay third, just make sure your front elft is on the edge of the track prior to making your turn-in, run it wide on the gas and off you go!
Fairly certain the ECU has a cut-off @ rev limit.
Anyone able to clarify?

Re: Dan's NC track toy
sorry sorry yeah the only 2nd gear corners are the fishhook (whatever # that one is) and T10 onto the main straight.
Blame a pre-caffiene post for the error..... quite correct HJT
Dan for the 13th I am heading down on the evening of the 12th and another guy meeting there also, so if you want to meet for dinner/beer let us know.
And apologies to Ralph for suggesting he told me 2nd for T2

Thanks mate, I'll be running 3rd at the next day to see how I go.
Yes the ECU has a rev limiter but that doesn't protect you on a downshift (other than not letting you put MORE gas into it), as long as you know roughly what speed each gears redline is or at least have a feel for it and use your brain not downshifting too far you'll be ok.

All good mate, I honestly didn't expect that comment to get so much feedback but it's been great to learn from everyones experience.
I'll be down there first thing in the morning as I'm not staying there overnight otherwise I'd definitely take you up on your offer.
I might have a couple of Evo boys and hopefully one of the guys testing out his new Excel for the upcoming NSW Excel cup in toe

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Always plenty of Evo boys at the CC days FYI!
They love us spoiling the parade
You will love learning the car, pushing the limits is the best part.
You need balls for 4/5, staying on the gas and trusting your car helps!
