I know the only way to drive a legal turbo mx5 is to get the AVO kit. But with the engine swap law, is it possible to swap a 1.8 into a NA6 and then turbo charge it. Hence, it's a turbo 1.8L engine and it complies with the engine swap law.

Depends on what state you live in.

the AVO kit being the only legal one applies to VICTORIA only, other states have different (generally easier) rules.


Your plan to swap the 1.8 won't work either, only the 1.6 AVO turbo kit is approved, not the 1.8.

If you do a swap for an engine that comes standard (including the ECU etc) in a MX5 then it is much easier to get approved. The issue will be if you replace the turbo and or ECU.

I've put an SE engine and associated bits (charge piping, intercooler, exhaust, brakes, ECU program) into my NB8A and have been told by an Approved Person that it is considered a minor modification in Queensland and doesn't require a mod plate as it is an optional engine package for the NB.

I did have to notify my insurance company though.

OP isnt sure how fast he wants to go but thinks a 1.8 is needed to go however fast that is.

OP isnt sure whats legal either way.

Tell us what the car will be used for, use another common vehicle and tell us you want to go as fast (ie, needs to keep up with wrx at traffic lights), and tell us where you live.

i guess you could in ( my flawed and ridiculous ) theory.

turbo charge your 1.6 get paper work store safely in glove box for turbo charged.

remove turbo 1.6 motor. and throw in rubbish ( because money aint no thang)

install n/a 1.8 motor. get paper work for 1.8 conversion and store safely in glove box.

buy brand new 1.8 turbo kit and install to 1.8 ( again money ... pfft easy come easy go right.... )

at which point you would have a 1.8 turbo with the paper work that would probably get you past a roadside traffic stop. however of course your car wouldnt actually be legal.

and the money that you've just pissed up the wall would make heroin look like a smart long term financial investment

You may as well just write a fake engineers report on the computer and get your mum to sign it.
It would have the same value as the engineers reports you described.


Also, afaik the way it works is that if anything is changed from what's on the engineers report, the previous one is invalid.

ie:
Engineered B6 turbo kit
change to BP with engineers report, vicroads log on system that prior report is invalid.



I'm pretty sure the way it works is that everything needs to be listed on the ONE report.
