Rear Parking Brake Problem

Postby Earlybird » Sun Aug 26, 2012 4:12 pm

Hi all,

Decided to have a crack at adjusting the park brake on my newly acquired NA and seem to have come to a dead end. I managed to get the driver side rotor grabbing by adjusting the grub screw behind the hex bolt on rear calliper although it doesn't seem to want to release properly once i let the hand brake off :/

The passenger side however refuses to do anything. The adjustment screw seems to do nothing (stripped?) and the actuator arm that the cable attaches to wont budge either (driver side moves but is very stiff).

Any hints to help out or should I just trundle off to the garage and let the moths out of my wallet??

Rear caliper issues are common on the NA, & passenger side in particular.

For handbrake adjustment see Russellb's post here:

If it still doesn't work then it could simply be seized slider pins, or worse, corosion inside the caliper, but have a look at this first:

Thanks for the links :)

I've had another look and the passenger side handbrake actuating level is stuck solid..no amount of crc or trying to free it via physical persuasion will budge it. As I mentioned earlier, the drivers side actuating lever does move but has a lot of resistance and wont spring back by itself when the hand brake lever is released. So....it looks like corrosion has set in and it's time to open the wallet.

Now the question is do I just buy new callipers (shiny and no stuffing around) or have them rebuilt (costly labour)? I've had a quick look on fee bay and can have 2 new rear callipers landed at my door for around $200.

Thats a very good price....I thinking that would be cheaper, and quicker than a re-build. Don't forget to keep the slider pins lubricated as part of your maintenance programme going forward.

Perhaps contact the ebay seller, if they are a brake re-conditioner they might give you some cash for sending your old callipers once you've fitted the ones you bought.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
