i am revving to 3000 before changing gears... i have a 6speed transmission too...if that helps?

Depending on the situation 3000rpm sounds too low. BP is a revvy motor. Accelerate up to speed then coast.

Bit hard to go over that in peak hour.... but that's where my gear changes feel comfortable in my 6 speed compared to my 5 speed 180sx... i rev that much higher...

According to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ average consumption for 6 speed NB MX5 is 23mpg (10.2L/100) city 21mpg (11.2L/100km) and highway 26mpg (9L/100km).

If you're doing better than that you're doing ok.

Thanks, hope that cleared it up but even with 'spirited' driving the figures are good, much better than I ever expected. I have always kept a log of fuel for each car simply because back in the 'dark ages' just after the horse & cart were invented it was one way to know when things were going downhill 'tuning' wise .. the days of the carby/points etc

I do have a laugh when I fill up after a 'track day' and check the consumtion!! Of course at Lakeside I use far more than QR simply because more rise and fall and much faster down the main straight. Do I get up it on a Track Day? well I am leading my class [NB modified] after 4 rounds so far this year

When I bought the NB I took it for a run a few days after up the M1 towards the Sunshine Coast, sat on 110kph and then came back and filled, simply for an idea .. 45.01mpg or 6.28L/100km .. comparative with what Mazda expect they will return on a long trip country driving

I will do the same with the 86 when it arrives and after I have the HKS exhaust system fitted, Toyota are claiming 7.5/100 so again around the same as an MX5 NB

Again, neither car has been dríven for economy, simply a matter of keeping records and seeing what's happening - PM if data required and provide email address

No worries, I have a mop or two at home and managed to get the puddles sopped up!

It sounds like your driving style is not causing any excess consumption (a lot of people rev the rings out of their car and then lope around in a low gear).

i never even said anything about how much i am spending... i was just trying to make sure my car is running correctly and something isnt stuffed or needing to be fixed/ replaced...

I appreciate everyone's replies trying to help me out.

I believe i have enough info now to go away, do some research and if i still think something is wrong, i have a list of things i can check from another helpful member

360km from an NB tank sounds fine to me.

I used to get 400km from a tank when I lived in the country (minimal traffic, nightly run through a twisty road)

Down in Melbourne, with traffic etc, it's around 350 or so from memory.

360km from an NB tank sounds fine to me.

48L tank roughly. If you fill up on empty based on the US govt figures I quoted above of apx 10L/100km you'll get apx 480km. If you fill up with 38L (10L reserve after needle goes to empty) you'll get 380km.

Anything better than that (which is achievable) is a fuel miser win.

PM me if you would like me to forward complete records for both cars. The 'normal' procedure when doing a track day at QR is fill car, drive 125km to the track via INNER CITY Brisbane, do 6-7 runs of the track, approximately 45-50 laps, and then drive home in peak hour

The NB on a trip from the Sunshine Coast to the Victorian Border, 1405km, could be managed with ONE fill in the middle, the car having the potential for 700km/tank and that is at the speed limit of 100/110kph down the Newell Highway. I prefer to make that trip a 2-stopper, Goondiwindi & Parkes

390km a tank highway cycle? I can only assume you had considerable engine modifications to that car! For the record, mine under the bonnet is absolutely standard, nothing done at all!!

I run 35-36psi in the KU36's all the time regardless, I don't droop along at all but I do keep a constant throttle and don't use the cruise control

My first car was a 65 Cortina 440, complete with bench seat and 4 on the tree BUT the previous owner had fitted a GT instrument cluster and amongst the gauges was a 'vacuum gauge', so hot the gas and in the red, lift off and back to the green!! I guess for that car on if I was highway cruising, and believe me I did quite a bit of that, for 100kph I would sneak to 105 and then lightly lift off and let the car settle at its own pace. Of course with the Cortina that was NOT an easy task!! It would struggle to get to 50mph!! [80kph]

Let me know what mods that NB had .. thats a hell of a lot of fuel regardless of cost
