Here's a question regards driving style-
What do you normally rev it to before changing gear?
Do you try to get to 5th (or 6th) gear asap, or do you let it sit in a lower gear when cruising?

first find out the litres per 100 km in the right way. Simple exercise. fill up / reset trip odo/ drive / fill up/ record litres and Km dríven/ calc KM/100/reset go thru same process a number of times. Avg .. whatever that is depends on how it is dríven and mix of urban versus country. NB P2 s/be av 8l per 100. If it is say 20% more it s/be checked by a pro. The fuel you put in eg 95 or 98 will make a very small diff- 5% at most offset by higher cost. People thrashing cars will pay in higher consumption- everyone knows that.

Sure, I've been around a long time and during my 40 years in motor sport managed to do a few controlled economy runs, learnt how you can drive a car fast and still return good economy. A Lexus IS200 has a 70 litre fuel tank and I managed to drive that from near Warwick Farm to Brisbane without a refuel, managed to get over 44mpg 'old speak' from my Corolla Sportivo inland from Brisbane to Wagga Wagga. Also managed to get 44mpg from a Datsun 240K 5-speed on an economy run from Wagga thru Tumut, Kiandra, Cabramurra and back to Tumut when a 76 VW Golf managed 57.99mpg

No I DON'T knock it out of gear going downhill
No I DON'T crawl uphills

I drive the car the way it was designed to be dríven, but within the speed limit both of them, NA & NB [or so I thought!]

As for the NA, it is a high peformance model, 98kW standard NA6 B-Spec. When I bought it and before the engine refresh it returned around 31-32mpg 'old speak' but since then it has managed far better without trying.

I live outside the city limits, so a trip for coffee on a Sunday morning would involve 80%+ of 100kph speed zones regardless of which I am in - so to be fair neither car, apart from a run to the shopping centre is dríven in 'Sydney' traffic conditions, far from it. The closest either goes to the city would be to MX5 Plus, 75% plus is 6 lane freeway, may explain a little more BUT, should I go for a run thru the mountains close to home, steep winding uphill roads and being dríven in a 'spirited' manner, that is how they average out. One MX5 Club run saw 40mpg+ when I would have expected maybe 35-36 considering the route we took

As for the B-Spec, and I am sure ORX-626 [who knows the car] will confirm its capabilities and that it requires far more than 4000rpm runs, so not doing 'track days' in it the only chance to get it right up in the revs is after a coffee and merging back onto the freeway!! Yeah, nice to be standing on the brake as you merge and pick 4th but I have NEVER 'flogged' a car, quite happy to take the NA to 6500 but the NB on the track has hit the rev limiter more than once or twice

Should you like me to email the sheets you will also see the economy from tank to tank where a 'track day' was included. 250km to and from the track and seven [7] runs of 5 flying plus warm-up lap and lead-out before a fill in the NB - not too bad and I wouldn't say 'driving for economy' To return 25-26mpg overall when a 'track day' is included is pretty good and a testament to those who tune and service the car

BTW, scared to go to the letterbox now after receiving 2 x nice photos of my car with the bill attached! The 'photographer' even included the time and date he/she took them - 35 minutes apart same 'film set' [location]

Roger, you just confirmed what I said in my post, your consumption figures are for country driving.

i can see in touched a raw nerve, sorry, but as others have said since my original post, "normal" city driving results in figures of between 9 & 10 litres per 100 klms for a NB8B/C.
I too kept records (isn't tax loverly) for three years, over 60,000 kilometers, including track days, Club runs, country runs but the majority was daily city driving. Average for the lot, 9.5 litres per 100 kilometers.

I guess there are too many variables to really compare how many kms i should be getting out of a full tank... i just noticed that my NA got much more KMS per tank and i drove that much more spirited than i drive my NB....

I will have a drive this morning and see what i rev too (havent payed much attention before)...

When i am cruising at 60 i am sitting in 5th gear if traffic is consistent... if its between 50 and 60 ill stay in 4th...

o2 sensor not working can cause the car to run rich otherwise I would suggest driving conditions & style would make the biggest difference. Choose the gear the car feels happiest in. Try to avoid lugging the car up hills and full throttle moments.

I've found the MX5 gives excellent fuel economy with my best being a round trip from Brisbane to Bundaberg of 700 odd km to a tank. Worst being in the low 200's for a track day.

Mostly flat constant highway speeds without heavy throttle use nets best economy.

re: turning engine off on hills, modern ECU's (and stand alone computers) cut fuel on overrun so I can't see how that would be required for hyper-miling. Just keep your foot off the accelerator whilst going downhill above 2000rpm and the car does it itself!

Easy things to check that may affect fuel consumption (you may have already done them)

Spark plugs
Air filter
Tyre pressures

Slightly harder things to check that may affect fuel consumption:

Cam angle sensor
Coil packs
Thermostat
Fuel filter (both in-tank coarse sock filter and underbody fine filter)
Ignition leads
Crank angle sensor
Throttle body (may be dirty)
Injectors
O2 sensors

People can probably think of many more.

Depending on the situation 3000rpm sounds too low. BP is a revvy motor. Accelerate up to speed then coast.
