Hi guys,
I have been doing some research and figuring out if the Sprint 500 has all the features I require and how to wire it up for my 1.6. So far i am stuck on how the ignition wires would work, the sprint 500 has 4 ignition wires, and has its own tach output. Looking at the COPS guide on Miataturbo, it would appear I have to wire it up as a 1.8 95.5+ setup because the sprint 500 has its own tach output, but the diagram for 1.8 95.5+ has no wiring for tach on the cops...
The other "solution" is to wire it up normally as a 1.6, and use the tach output on from the sprint 500 to each cop..
So to wire it up it should be either like this:
1.8 95.5+ method
Ground - Ground
Trigger - trigger 1,2,3,4 (sprint 500)
12v - 12v (blue)
OR
1.6 method
Ground - Ground
Trigger - trigger 1,2,3,4 (sprint 500)
Tach - tach 1,2,3,4 (1 wire split into 4)
12v - 12v (blue)

Wire your 4 ignition outputs to each coil (make sure you get the firing order right) then wire the tac output from the sprint to the tac wire in the loom.
Personal I think there are better options then a sprint.... But depends on what your doing I guess. The 500 is about the same price as an adaptronic 440 for memory?
Edit : same price as a 420c, the adaptronic might have more input / outputs though. Worth a look.

i think you mean e420d? I'v had a look at both e420d and the PnP 440 Select, but I don't think i will be using all these features. The sprint 500 has the everything function i need in it at a cheaper price and i get to retain OEM functions like aircon and iavc (using stock ecu).
The 440 also looks good but at a higher price point, but seems alot easier to get going considering its PnP.
I'm still thinking about what ecu to go with but the sprint 500 seems more appealing because it will cost less and has what i need atm.
Have you had any experience with the adaptronic units? thoughts?

Yes sorry meant the d. I have the 440, the after sales support is awesome.
The 420 will handle your idle and air conditioning fine, but will take a little more setup to get it right. Neither have auto tune from what I can see.
The haltec only supports high impedance injectors.
Too me it comes down to what inputs and outputs the ecu has, I always like extra for expandability.
Is it road car or race car? NA I assume?

Its NA and going to have cams + basic headwork done soon, dont have plans for F.I but you make a good point for extra expandability. Got me thinking again, will be asking someone about adaptronic when i head up mania tomorrow.

Most of the adaptronic inputs are taken up by electrical load items to trigger idle up. This is interior fan, ac, ps, demister, headlights and stop lights? So the fewer of these things you use the fewer inputs you require inputs you require.
My thoughts low cost mega squirt sub 1000
Lower mid 420, maybe haltec, but looks more limited to me.
Mid 440
Upper motec m84. Costs about the same as a platinum sport. Motec has come down a lot.
There are plenty of arguments for the mega squirt in more of these categories. But I'm not going to go into that.
End If the day though.
Find talk to some tuners, and find one you like or one that likes the ecu you like. See what level they recommend and see how that falls against what you know.
There are of course other options like vipec, autronic ect.
Finally remember at the end of the day the ecu is expensive, but the tuning will be 600 to 800 for a full set up. Head and cams will be 1500, msic gaskets, coils. Ect will be 400. So don't hamstring yourself with just enough.

Just noticed that in the COPS guide they say to wire a 10,000uF capacitor between 12v and Ground. Is there a reason for this? Please explain?

There is a voltage drop in the standard loom, it didn't worry the stock coils, but it under powers the Toyota ones. The cap gives stops the voltage so the coils completely charge at the coils normal dwell time.
