It's up to you if you want to pay more for that, and whether or not you're prepared to pay the extra $100+ for the brand.

In fact, I might bring in the Works Engineering equivalent of the AEM setup and dyno them, haha! I'm going to be doing that for a couple of Honda and Evo setups, just to prove the price differential isn't worth it.

And I know for a fact that the quality of the Works Engineering filter will outperform many of the top name Japanese brands as they've been independently tested and reviewed. I'll revive those articles when we're done with the comparisons.

Well the proof is in the pudding I guess..what I get from this discussion is that rerouting the standard intake would produce little or no benefit, but the AEM intake and its ilk would. Whether or not it is worth spending $00's for a few kw is open to debate. But what if the standard filter was replaced with a freer flowing one such as a K&N? Negligible benefit? I'd be interested in seeing the differences!

Anyway I have been enlighted, so thank you everyone.

You'd get 1-2kW with a K&N panel filter, which tests have shown don't filter as well as people think. However, people will still buy K&N because of the brand.

In fact, one reviewer did say that he would still buy the K&N filter even though a lesser know brand outperformed it (you know who you are, and I'll hopefully see you at WTAC, hahaha!)

In all fairness, K&N is a quality product and is regarded as "safe". The thing is, manufacturing quality has caught up...I don't believe they've made any leaps in recent times. Proof is how much cheaper K&N has become in recent years. They've needed to just to be competitive, because their quality is not significantly better than the competition.

Chris,
Before I fitted the AEM I had the K & N panel filter with the Colbalt CAI and I noticed no difference in power. With the AEM intake I did notice a difference but not much. For the money you're better off getting Daniel to do a reflash.

I remember reading a long time ago that the standard flat filter vs any other flat filter in the oem intake would make no performance difference. However once the nc is supercharged, then the cosworth filter did show an improvement in performance over the standard filter. Is this still the case?

Also, I always thought that installing the supercharger meant using the standard intake. Is this also no longer the case? Can the AEM intake be installed before the supercharger to gain further performance?

I think Dann and Charlie Brown are right on the money and what they've said about no gains probably translates into a supercharged setup too.

I don't have any direct experience with the NC but I do have experience with the Evo X which has an Airbox in the same position as the NC's, on Evo's an aftermarket cone filter basically shows little to no gain over the stock airbox with a panel filter (I make 300kw on the stock airbox with a Cosworth Panel filter myself), I can't see the NC being much different.

Even if it does make a couple of kw's you'd probably be better off putting that money into a free flowing exhaust, cam's or headwork rather than worrying about your car not getting enough air.

As with every "will my car make X if I do Y" question the only way to really answer it is with a Pepsi challenge on the dyno.

Hahaha,

Good luck convincing even 5% of the mx5 community that headwork will help, most dont even believe that cams give worthwhile gains hahahaha.

Seriously,

Oh I'm sure they are already convinced, it's just that
1. there are better initial gains using bolt on equipment
2. many of us track in classes where internal mods are prohibited.
3. most of us use our cars as daily drives and most cams giving worthwhile improvement will not be a good daily.
