When I get home Ill post up sone info, facts and maybe a 650Nm, 300rwhp dyno sheet to make my point clear.

Go for gold.... i wont be back to check it out.

I know you can get more power from a full custom job....... Charlie's NA is a prime example. (great car too)

But its also unreliable, spends ALOT of time in the workshop, and is properly impractical for a daily driver (NSW police told him not to come back!)

Dann, sometimes a custom turbo kit (although sometimes cheaper, and nearly always more powerful) is not the best way to go for most people.

Some people want to drive their cars.....not build them

8)
To be fair, your example needs engineering also.

The SE brakes are nb8b brakes. If you want to argue brakes and 6 speed, 6 speed is 1000 and can be put in with your clutch, and brakes are 500 odd.

Lets be honest, rims on an SE dont count, they are upgraded to non SE rims all the time, cos stock NB wheels are better.
The bodykit is PURELY subjective.
The seats are subjective 100%.
And whats a 6 stacker? ( )

The one must have item for an SE is the one thing thats argued makes an aftermarket turbo car not a possibility.
ECU.

Stock ecu SEs with any mods drive like sh*t.

No if buts or maybe's.

The other thing is that you are comparing to a used car, thats been modified to modifying a car yourself, which everyone knows is far more expensive.
An already well built, engineered NA/NB turbo car can be bought from 12000, leaving 4000 for mods or (and to counter this argument) 'sorting it out'.

Options are..

Buy a used stock SE. $16,000.
120rwhp, reliable, poor power curve, and no more fun than a 10k NB.

Buy a modified SE. 18,000.
180rwhp, illegal and needs engineering wont pass on stock ecu, requires at least a new ECU just to drive nice, poor power curve.

Buy a used NB8a and fit quality equipment (choice of coilover brand/rates, choice of swaybars, choice of clutch, choice of turbo size).
230rwhp, illegal, needs engineering but can pass due to proper ecu, handles, goes, stops, great torque curve and driveability.

Buy the above car already built, 14,000.
As above but like an SE, will be modified to suit someone elses taste.

Was going to post results for patrick bramstons na6.

Runs 1.05's.
Has 300rwhp.
More torque than you can use, no joke. 650Nm.
Cost is similar to buying an SP.

Ok i lied... i got drawn back in :)

True, Begi air filter shouldnt be illegal, and neither should exhaust i dont think..... either way shouldnt be a problem.

Just wanted to point out, no matter how cool Charlies NA looks, his recent posts are a prime example as to why MOST people buy the SE/SP instead of going custom....

I still love Charlies NA, but i couldnt handle it being off the road as much as it is.... (although it is a different beast to what i need to get to work daily)

I dont think his car is a good example.

There are some beginner preparation mistakes, either on his behalf, or his workshops.

Having said that, Ive also made the same mistakes. For one, Ive not yet purchased a bead roller, which I need to when I can justify the cost.

Either way a fast, reliable, legal turbo car is best started with a non SE base.

I'm no expert, but would starting with an SE (which came out of the factory with a turbo) mean there are less issues with further mods including a bigger better turbo?
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

No, because you have to replace practically everything that makes it an se.

You will end up replacing the downpipe, exhaust, turbo, intercooler, ecu, blow off valve etc.

Casper traded hands for 5k more than my factory SP, which I bought 12 months ago.

Recently a modified SE with 160rwkw went for below 15k.

No point in arguing, its all situational.

Easily to fool the law with a modified base turbo then a non, but still illegal.

I agree you'll want to replace them Dann, but if you're ever pulled for a check you'll be able to prove the car left the factory with an intercooler, turbo etc.

Obviously never having been pulled over regarding your car being turbo, or youd realise that those factors mean nothing to highway patrol.

HJT: Patricks car has 5k worth of brakes and radiator alone.. If you put nb8b brakes on it instead and an asi radiator then youd still be far head in terms of the car you get for the price of an SP.

What about it.

Your all now just picking little bits and pieces the user may or may not care about.

"What about the SE badge and red cam cover"

Your all missing the main thing - Red Stitching on SE gear knob!

I have been following this debate and decided it is silly.

It's not going to be legal in at least Vic with the BP as you'll need a programable ECU, & this is why Blue94T went with the SR20DET.
