You can make nice power and torque with Vvt but not really the way to go on a se cast offs / shoe string budget. I think you'll find it Cheaper in the long run to just buy a car done or do it properly the first time.
I would really like a Mega Squirrel only need to find the nuts.
Could Chip Torque help? They have done SP and are developing SE chips, maybe a NB8B/SE bastard hybrid would be easy. Starting to venture into unknown territory with ECU stuff. Bugger!
