Edit: I noticed auto correct like squirrel more than squirt... But I left it.

You can make nice power and torque with Vvt but not really the way to go on a se cast offs / shoe string budget. I think you'll find it Cheaper in the long run to just buy a car done or do it properly the first time.

I would really like a Mega Squirrel only need to find the nuts.

Could Chip Torque help? They have done SP and are developing SE chips, maybe a NB8B/SE bastard hybrid would be easy. Starting to venture into unknown territory with ECU stuff. Bugger!

Higher Compression isn't necessarily a good thing. SPs all ping something fierce because of this. When I built my engine I fitted 8.5:1 Wiseco forged pistons to drop the comp and solve this issue, which it did without any noticeable loss of power. I can of course increase my boost as a result, and may do that at some point. Sailoholic has the right idea. Sell your NB - say $12k (I don't know what your particular car is worth, just generalizing) and buy a sorted SE at $18k (there's been a good example on here for that) and you've achieved your goal with minimal frustration. If you're a frustrated engineer though, go ahead and DIY, but ditch the VVT before you start, or talk it through with your tuner.

You dont need to ditch vvt, you can just leave it deactivated. Although thats not the best solution.

Honestly, id buy a predone one is your case.

+1

Hold out for the TrackSpeed Engineering kit to become available: http://www.miataturbo.net/prefabbed-turbo-kits-3/trackspeed-engineering-turbo-kit-65534/

Despite the fact it uses an AEM ECU, savington should have all the kinks worked out with regard to tuning (even for VVT engines) so that shouldn't be an issue.

This will be the best after-market turbo kit available, it will use savington's latest optimised track-proven components (as opposed to some of FM's kits that were designed years ago and hardly, if ever, modified) - its cost will be easily offset by the fact that it should simply be bolt in and hook-up affair, you wont be spending months/years cobbling together a system that works well.

EFR turbos look awesome, while they aren't breaking off exhaust wheels anyway!

Just read that thread (http://www.miataturbo.net/engine-performance-56/efr-turbo-le-why-u-gotta-b-such-bitch-66305/).

These turbo issues should be sorted out by the time the TSE kit is available - obviously a manufacturing fault that MUST be rectified given that there have been several instances of the exhaust wheels breaking up.

THE TEN STAGES OF MX-5 ENLIGHTENMENT ACCORDING TO BOOTZ:

1. Buy MX-5 (any non turbo model)
2. Hey this is great but it needs a bit of power
3. Lets turn it into a turbo/supercharged monster
4. Whoa, it costs about $10K and another $10K of your time to organise it all
5. Flower it, I have to pay for engineering as well to make it legal ???
6. Flower it all, I wish I had bought a turbo
7. Damn only 100 SP in existence!
8. Find out about all the 'compromises' with the SE and costs to mod.
8. Appreciate the hassle free nature of the standard car
9. Go back to point 2 again.
10. Search around for a cherry SP or nicely modded SE - NIRVANA.

Sacre Bleu! That was a remarkably witty and restrained comment from you.

Bootz- that is a bible reading bud... dead on.
Followed that exactly till the bit about the SE/SP, as I found a gt25/28 combo stuck on the side of a NB with braids and brakes and clutch and teins and...
There is no cheaper way than to buy it done- but you lack in the satisfaction of the tinker, and having knowledge of every facet of the build if something goes wrong later... (like at QR for me last month...)
I have to say that from a legalities view point- in Qld most of the cars registered now, (including mine) would not pass though a reutable engineer fresh today. We all know some that have been passed, but the engineer is taking a huge risk and prob. wont be round long... The guys at mx5plus were clear with me- they knew a clear path to getting a standard sr20det conversion through. The weight difference is next to nothing, and it's cheap easy power. You have to leave it standard for the engineering though, must be stock as a rock and have the stock ECU. this sounded like the best path to me at the time...
I can say that the gt25 on a 1.8 is oodles of fun- but very difficult to get through rego if you don't already have a blue plate.
QR clubman 64.93 - lakeside 67 neat- first time out...
