What electrical connectors to use?

Hi all

Just after some information / recomendations for people. I have a few aftermarket bits and pieces that require wiring of some sort or another. I would rather not use typical crimp connectors as ive had issues with these in the past ( possibly due to using cheap plugs / crimping tool ), also soldering isnt ideal as i have no power where the car is.

I'd like to have each component have its own "harness" with the ability to disconnect when needed. Connectors dont need to be waterproof but it's a ncie bonus. Ill pick up some nice marine grade electrical tape to wrap things as needed.

Hey Scott,

It's hard to go past soldering. If power is your problem you can get a gas soldering iron for around $40 for a good one. Heat shrink is the way to go to insulate the connections.

I used deutch connectors and Jay car connectors. Jay car were sh*t and super hard / impossible to depin.

Deutch were the bomb. Better then oem quality super easy to decrease pin. Priced about the same as jaycar, but deutch connectors do need an expensive crimping tool.

automotive crimp connectors work fine as long as they are crimped and cut properly. Crimping pliers ie like vice grips are colour coded to match connector sizes. Wires can have shrink tube applied if necessary to finish of neatly. Crimp connectors (these are readily available already with insulation ) are very low cost but tried and proven. Automotive plugs and sockets are best used to accept the more common size terminals and blades. If you use smaller speciality types you run into compatibility of wire diameters and the ability to fix the terminals. Auto loom makers apply these products with high speed automated equipment. A home handyman needs only correct size auto wire a handful of terminals a wire stripper and a crimping tool which are no longer expensive. Scotchlocks are known to be dodgy and last resort for wire connections. You might be able to buy some suitable housings male / female with required number of terminals at Bursons or Repco etc. Catalogs eg Narva or Hella etc list many connectors
