Adaptronic / mtx-l problem

Postby psquire45 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:58 pm

Howdy.

So im having trouble with setting up my adaptronic and inovate mtx- l

So heres the connections ive got

Red wire power
Black wire ground
Yellow / brown not connected
White not connected
Serial out connected to adaptronic or pc

The adaptronic doesnt log any data for afr and doesnt show afr in the gauges panel
The pc comes up with an error saying that there is nothing connected to the serial port when i try to connect it to lm programmer or logworks

The gauge how ever lights up calibrates and displays afr on the gauge face

So im a little out of ideas? Faulty gauge ?
Is it not communicating with the adaptronic because i havent been able to access it via pc to do some settings ?

Ive got it set the way it says to with the adaptronic. O2sensor setting to none / special functions set to lc1 etc

Ive checked the fitting of the connector to the adaptronic and that seats fine.

Ah well any ideas would be great because im really starting to scratch my head about this

Hi Paul,

What model car / what model adaptronic.

I cant remember the wiring for the mxtl, but the rest looks ok. As a test try running the analouge wideband output from the mxtl into the adaptronic and see if you get a reading?
You could just hold the wire onto the the correct pin (though clipping it onto a little screw driver or paper clip would be easier) with the ignition on and see if the adaptrnoic displays a lambda value under gauges.

As for trying to talk to the mxt-l, i assume you are using a usb to serial converter -> rectangular to round serial converter -> guage. Go to device manager and check which port it has assigned you converter to. Sometimes windows gives high port numbers ie >20 by default.

Check the mxt-l software to see how port number it will accept and if you need to specificy a port or if it will auto assign. If you can't get it to connect on the port the covnerter get assigned automoaticly, configure (right click on the device in device manager) and go through the settings to where you can select the com port number. Assign it something like 1, or 2. Then go back to the Mxt-l software tell it to look at which ever com port you used and try again.

Once you get it sorted, you might want to hook up that dimmer trigger wire as the gauge is very bright at night. to factory wiring to the head unit has a dimmer wire to the head unit (in NA8 anyway). Just check that the wire has a constant voltage change when you turn the headlights on, but the dash dimming control has no effect. Ie the wire should be a trigger only. If it comes from the variable dimmer it can cause damage to the MXT-L apparently.

Hi nick thanks for the help

The car is a nb8a and the ecu is an adaptronic select nb8a model

Currently the mtx-l is connected to the pc via the rs232 cable however im going to try and get into jaycar today and pick up a rs232 to usb adapter

Ill try your advice when i get home tonight

As for wiring in the analog connections with the select ecu do you know the pinout of the connectors?
Id prefer to not start pulling it apart tho so this will be my absolute last resort :(

Pinouts are available as a PDF under the WARI folder in the start menu for generics ecu. If you open the adaptronic file, go to help (for memory) it will have a "pin outs for this ecu". Have a look there.
Alternatively try emailing Andy. Once you locate the correct pin you should be able to get a fine screw driver (like the on you would use on sunglasses) and poke it down the back of the plug then hook the wire onto that for a temp setup.

RS-232 cable direct in is generally more reliable not less! hmm, i'd still check which comm port it has been assigned too.

I know lokiel had some problems getting the serial plug to seat properly into the adaptronic, for memory the plug hole was a touch recessed? this caused the plastic part of the plug to stop the metal part going all the way in.

Cheers for the tips

Ill try themwhen i get home

Im also questioning the wiring from the mtxl

From memory the out plug is wired
To the serial out plug for pc
Red >red
White>white
Black > blue
Blue> black

I might try switching the black and blue and see if the laptop picks it up

Still scratching my head with this one. No longer second guessing the wiring from the mtx-l

Picked up a usb to serial adapter and my laptop reads the output from the mtx-l fine via usb
Its definately seated into the socket on the adaptronic select
02 sensor is set to none
Special functions is set to innovate lm-1 etc

No afr output logs and nothing shows up in the gauges panel

What have i missed?

Short of wiring it in as an analog

Havent got the car sorted yet but i would like to give a huge mention to the amazing customer service from adaptronic.

So i sent an email last night 7pm or so listing what was wrong and what id tried etc.

Andy from adaptronic setn me a response at 8:45 this morning asking a few questions etc on things that i had either tried or not. His next guess for the most likely cause of the problem may be a faulty wire from the mtxl to the adaptronic. So rather than right it off as not his product etc etc ( bare in mind they dont make the mtx, and i purchased it from mania)

Andy Drove out to my work HIMSELF! Dropped off a replacement wire to test and Stood here for 20 minutes talking me thru a few things to check if that doesnt solve the problem.

Absolutely amazing customer service.
Very very please to have gone with the adaptronic at the moment.

This problem is now resolved.

I tried a few things that andy mentioned as well as the new innovate wire. And it now works pefectly.

I un screwed all the case slid the board back into the open chassis of the case to protect it.

Connected everything up and if the afr gauge is connected properly to the ecu there will be a green led light up on the raised board in the adaptronic.

I then trimmed about 1mm off the outer sleeve of the 2.5 mm jack to ensure a good fitting once the case was reassembled.

I then assembled the adaptronic case ensuring hat the main bord was pressed as firmly against the end of the adaptronic case as possibe

This all fired up and gave the correct afr reading in the wari sofware once the mtxl had heated to operating temp

Ive now put 20km on the car in the rapid learning mode and the car is running almost faultlessly much smoother than the standard ecu, it used to knock when going WOT at about 2500rpm, it no longer does and suprisingly it hold the target ecu for set rpm/throttle position much better than the standard mazda ecu.

Other than this minor hiccup. And lets face it i changed the ecu in my car to an essentially stand alone unit, there will be hiccups. My experience so far with the adaptronic and andy's customer service has been an extremely positive experience and i would definately recommend any one considering their options for an aftermarket ecu to go with the adaptronic.

I'm getting the exact same issue now, so your fix was to change the serial output wire from the MTX-L?
