Fire extinguisher

Where do you get them refilled or checked over? At the last MX5 day I got pulled up because mine didn't have a stamped swing tag thing on it.

Usually by the manufacturer. Ie. Chubb etc.

But usually it's as cheap to buy a new one than getting it refilled (especially when they're on special at around $20ea)

Isn't it cheaper to just buy from shop instead refilling? plus fire extinguisher isn't necessary at track anymore, according to new rule I think anyway..

But if you have just purchased it, it needs a tag on it. Where does one go to get that AS1851 maintenance record tag stamped

A scrutineer at the last mx5 track day was giving me strife for not having this tag stamped

I'm not sure it's a CAMS requirement that they need to be stamped (or reinspected at a given interval).

Your local fire station should be able to do it.

If there's no tag on it then scrutineers check the date of manufacture which is stamped on the body near the base. It's cheaper to replace than to inspect. Over time your house gets progessively safer as it fills up with perfectly good fire extinguishers.

I just checked the CAMS manual, there was a change made this year. It's as Magna states, there's no need for a tag but if it's not there they run off the initial fill date stamped on the extinguisher. That date must be no more than 3 years old for a AS1841 extinguisher.

The rules for CAMS schedule H have changed and they're no longer required for any CAMS speed event or race meeting.

Stupid rule but that's what it says....

Most scrutineers are not aware of this rule change so you have to help them understand what it means.

Not by my reading of the schedule, Chrs. It seems to say that extinguishers are no longer required for race meetings but still required for speed events, which is what most of us do when we have club track days.

Yes you are correct. I left out a very important "non" which changes the context of the whole ruling.

Any speed event still must have extinguisher(s) as per Table 1 at the bottom of the Schedule H ruling I linked to.

The Club days run under AASA regs not CAMS so it may be different again.

For the cost of an extinguisher I would advise everyone to get one. How this ruling came to pass at CAMS is beyond me... Fingers crossed it does not take an injury for them to come to their senses.
