Just had my first autokana day with my "new" 04 NB SE.
On my last couple of runs i noticed a quite (just audible) high pitch noise when under WOT, in second gear. and disappears as soon as you back off.
the sound is not a Mechanical whine.
The sound does not appear under normal driving.
Upon chatting with a few of the other MX5 guys and checking all hoses and fluid levels we could see nothing obviously wrong.
as i am new to Turbo's this is a whole new world of issues!!!
Has anyone heard as similar sound. Any ideas for me to checkout
My car is stock at the moment
Cheers

Either a belt or a dead turbo.

Re: NOOB Question - WOT Noise - high pitch sound?
Wrecked turbo's can make such a noise when the impeller rubs against the inside of the housing, sending metal filings through the engine.... That is fairly extreme though. Get it checked asap - there should be zero shaft play. If there is any shaft play, you potentially have the above problem to some extent.
Could also be a very small air leak somewhere between turbo and throttle body which only makes itself known under full load - small hole in one of the rubber hose sections of that pipework...

Re: NOOB Question - WOT Noise - high pitch sound?
I have spoken with another owner and he mentioned that it could be the throttle body pipe leaking as he noticed that mine was not seated fully on the TB and the pipe bracket was not on straight.
so i need to check this and then take another SE owner for a drive with me to see what sounds Normal.

I dont agree that the turbo needs NO shaft play, but anything more than a millimeter or so in any direction is pushing it.

It's not just the turbo spool noise is it?

Rich, do any of your gopro videos feature the noise? Stick them up here.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
