Go Kart Racing... not MX5s but pretty close!

Postby zossy1 » Mon Jul 16, 2012 10:23 am

Most of you may recall that I race TAG Karts, and that I contested the NSW Closed State Titles over this past weekend.

The weekend was going very well until this happened:

But thankfully, after some Nurofen, Dencorub and 5-6 hours of fixing the kart, I was able to fight back from the rear of the grid to podium:

Now tell me this doesn't look fun!!! Even with the soreness I had, I had an absolute ball!

Looks like he followed Bryan thru the apex but couldn't handle the lack of two wheels. Glad you came off ok and recovered for the podium congrats!

Sprint Karting is great fun...

You should look into trying SuperKarts one day ;) there the ultimate rush !!

I have tried superkarts (at Eastern Creek) and sprint shifter karts too - both are awesome but I don't yet have the skills to compete against the top guys in shifters, and the cost and lack of tracks keeps me out of superkarts (at least the big National class karts). The Rotaxes on control SL tyres look fun but again, only 2 tracks in NSW where you can punt them around.

What I love about sprints is the level of competition, low cost, and track choice - you can't beat it for these reasons, and let's face it, if I'd had that accident in a superkart I might not be here typing this either!

I've said this before, but I really should come and check it out next time you're in Newcastle.

They need to bring in the FIA CIK rear bars for you guys, sprint kart guys all want to go from last to first before turn 1 on first lap :)

Glad your OK, could have easily been alot worse, he climbed your back wheel hey ?

I raced sprint karts for 4 or 5 years on and off in late 90's to 2001. (clubmans, Rotax, CIK ICA) I love karting its a heap of fun and teaches you alot of good skills.

I currently race a 250 Twin superkart now, best thing ive ever dríven by a long shot.

That TAG class you run looks like a great concept with the electric start.

What rubber do you have to run ? open or MG yellow/red ?

They are optional for all classes except DD2 and CIK. Most people don't run them as it is believed it encourages people to bump you in turns...

I run mine if I need to soften the rear and couldn't be bothered changing axles ;)

I still don't really know what happened, but according to spectators he went infield on the grass and hit the back of the ripple strip, and that got him airborne and carried him into and over my right rear wheel, engine, seat, my back, and over the kart.

The Restricted and Open Sportsman classes all run MG Reds. The Rotax Pro Tour, a Rotax-only series, runs Mojo rubber. The Open Leopard class runs MG Yellows - so depending on the class you choose, all TAG engines can run MG Reds, or if you have a Leopard or Rotax you can run the rubber those classes offer.

Nice work on the final run, all the hard work is paying off. Unlucky in the Qualifying heat, I take it the Chassis is still ok?

I'm pumped up to have a go now!

Yep the chassis survived, but a number of the peripherals were bent (axle, steering column, steering wheel, sprocket & carrier, etc). Thankfully I carry spares for most of the important parts that were bent :)
