DanZig's NA6
Been lurking on here for a while so figured it's time to show what I've been up to and at least have something to look back uppon and hopefully see an improvement in my driving!
My name's Daniel and my username's related not to the metal band but myself and my dog Ziggy (named after Bowie's alter-ego). Here he is looking throughtful:
Enough about a dog though, we're interested in cars!
Here's a few I prepared earlier:
My first real car which is an R32 GTST which ended up with me swapping in an RB25DET and a host of other gofast and handling bits. Was a good car which I later
Sold when I acquired this:
"Stevo" the Evo 7 which was a fantastic car. Full exhaust tuned for 200KWATM and had Cusco bracing, swaybars and ohlin coilovers. The one issue I did face with it was I was far too mechanically sympathetical with it. I'll put this down to not being able to afford serious breakage and damage to it as opposed to the truth which is that I'm a pussy.
While owning Stevo I decided to make something (why didn't I just buy an MX) cheaper which I could afford to dispose of should I run out of skill.
This is what I came up with and this is what I did (and still do) with it:
It's a stripped out KE70 running a rebuilt (to stock specs) 4AGE which the usualy exhaust boltons ect. I'm still currently competing with it in the local dirt motorkhana (coming first in class currently) and khanacrosses (not being beaten by kids yet currently).
I had a go at time attack with the GSREVO club resulting in a 1.33.XX on free tires with no wheel alignment or skill.
and I also had a go with the drift kids as all KE70 driftkings do:
Now, this is where things get relevent and I'm introduced to the wonder world of MX5's.
After selling the Evo which I replaced with an BA XR8 (i was riding downhill a lot and needed a ute) I was thinking long and hard about getting another cheap import to thrash around with and hopefully oneday learn how to drive. I'd always been pretty keen on the little MX due to it's light weight, simplistic nature and pretty cool sportscar appeal. Luckily enough my partner also is a hairdresser so I can easily hide behind the old "it's not my car" should I be feeling a little less masculine. Another major influence on the MX has been reading through a few of the great threads on here with the standout being local forum celebrity Bryan's "Little Reddy".
After looking at a few different models and convincing she who should be obeyed that we need one I settled on this neat, cheap little run around:
(original sale picture)
Stock as a rock (besides the wheels but they'll do) 1991 NA6, 240k on the clock but cheap and cheerful besides a dodgy clutch which was to be replaced ASAP!
Here's one of are early drive's together. It was true love:
Plenty more to come!

Re: DanZig's NA6
After replacing the clutch, I replaced the shagged shocks with some new kyb excel g's and kingspring lows (didn't really notice it being much lower at all or stiffer) but as I got them trade I figured why not:
Next it was time to get a rollbar to protect my head. Been really happy with this one from Brown Davis which you can sort of see on this nice picture from a whimsical run with a mate's newly acquired NB:
First event for the little MX was competing in the Mt Alma Mile which I came 98th in and first in my class (against a 4K KE70 mind you haha). Managed to get a best of 01:02.462 which I'm pretty happy with as a modified NA8's best was in the 59's. All in all was a good fun first event to break in my MX competition virginity:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oyxS3Gb1bA
Next up was a practice day with a buddy at Mallala which was a blast. Was impressed how the MX held up only getting a bit hot after being pushed for quite a few laps in a row. Nothing really interesting to show form that day though.
I decided enter the come and try day at Collingrove as the video's looked pretty fun. Managed to get a best of 41.13 on the day which I was happy with as my times were consistantly improving.
41.13 run:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hct7mH4y-Ko
27/05/12 I competed in the Collingrove Windercup Round 2 which I managed 8th in the under 2ltr class with a best of 40.58. Unfortunately my gopro was flat on arrival =( Will be competing in round 3 on the 15th which I'm pumped for.
23/6/12 I had a practice day at mallala finally with a lap timer (RaceChrono) and managed a 1:35.Something. Was pretty happy with that considering it was damp and my front tyres delaminated cutting my day short. I've still got a lot of work to do.
I'll be hopefully getting some new tyres this week, purchasing a decent bucket seat, installing my Hawk pads and getting out as much as possible. I gonna try and get involved with the Super Sprint rounds. Don't really have plans to modify the car too much, maybe a few little tweaks here and there but nothing serious. Really want an LSD though and then just try and learn how to drive!

Why thank you sir! Glad to hear that I've inspired someone.
To LSD or not to LSD? How I'd love to have an LSD - I reckon it's the single best mod in an MX-5! However what I would say is that having an LSD can make you a bit lazy because it's so much easier to drive. An open diff forces you to be really careful with the throttle and weighting in tight corners, and you'll learn to optimize the power down with your limited tools. What you'll learn will apply to anything else you drive after that.
Have you made contact with Rob Jones yet?

Re: DanZig's NA6
I certainly agree. My intention is to keep it as stock as I can but I think an LSD is something I can justify. It just makes the car so damn fun! You do really have to be careful with the open diff otherwise it just starts spinning one wheel like a p-plater's VN in the wet. I'm spnning the wheels a lot at collingrove but I put a bit of that down to cheap balding tyres which have possibly been on the car for a very long time. It'll be interesting to see how the pilot sport 3's I'll be having installed tomorrow help improve grip.
I've just got an email from Rob and I'll be eligable for marque sports cars B:
MARQUE SPORTS CARS: Cars listed on attached list or at discretion of the Clerk of Course
NO FREEDOMS UNLESS STATED
Wider wheels any type up to 2 inches
Lowered ride height
Shocker ratings
Suspension bushing materials
ONE other performance advantage item only from the list below
Increased diameter swaybar
Additional swaybar
Larger diameter exhaust (not including non factory extractors)
No mention in the document regarding LSD's however, I'll have to give Rob a call on that one.

Re: DanZig's NA6
Been pretty busy so haven't had time to update but here's what has been going on:
On the 7th I did a test day with Sporting Car Club which was fun. Managed to get down to a 1:32.6 which I'll upload as soon as I get some editing software sorted.
Wanted to put on a good show for the crowd with a "sweet drift bro" but sadly my skills were a little lacking but actually resulted in a more spectacular display:
Managed to get it sorted next lap though:
According to RaceChrono my best theoretical time was a 1:30.8. I felt my Michelin Pilot Sports 3 held up OK although after a few laps I'd start running out of grip. I'm concluding they were getting too hot. My best times were always early on in the session on the second and third laps. I was running about 34PSI cold which I lowered as they were getting pretty hot (45+ my gauge doesn't go much higher) after I came in. Need to do a little more research in regards to what's the best to run for them. I will most likely be looking for some semi's very shortly so I don't kill my road tyres and drive at a higher level. The seat and brakes were fantastic throughout the day.
As soon as I get some vids up I'd really appreciate some constructive criticism. Looking forward to getting back out. Spoke to Rob again and LSD's are fine and wont bump me up a class.
I'll do another update as soon as I get my pics and vids sorted from Collingrove. =D Was a great day!

Re: DanZig's NA6
Collingrove was a fantastic day despite the icy temperature. We were fortunate enough to not see any rain for the day which was especially important as I wanted to see if my new tyres helped much. As it turns out they did help as I manged to get 3 runs into the 39's with a best of 39.44. This was helped by dropping rear pressure to ~24 PSI. I perhaps could of tried lower but I tried a few other things which didn't really help. Hopefully get some pics off a mate as soon as he uploads.
Here's my best.

Can't wait to go back but I'll need to skip this final round as I'll be heading off to Europe for a few weeks in September. As soon as the wallet recovers I'll be back competing. Should be able to squeeze in a the super sprint though.

Re: DanZig's NA6
Was going to upload some of the Collingrove pics but they pretty much all look the same as previous except this one:
Haven't done anything to the car as of recent as I'll be going to Europe next month for a bit. Tonight however I got some new shoes. Not exactly what I was after but considering they were brand new for half price I couldn't resist. Hopefully fit this week:
Before I go I'll be entering Legends of the Lake which is in November and gonna be awesome!

Re: DanZig's NA6
The wheels are growing on me. For the price I'm happy, though, I had to roll the rear guard slightly due to the 8" rim. They make the car a little angrier and more importantly I've got the other wheels spare for some semi's
Managed to get fit in a khanacross last weekend but sadly I'll have to wait until after my Europe trip before I can take the MX. Itching to do another practice day at Mallala with some semi's so hopefully early November I'll have the time and cash.
