I'd use the older r-specs then. They probably don't owe you as much as fresh street tyres.

Honestly it's his first hill climb. He's not going to break records. He just needs the experience.

Street tyres are more forgiving, work better in the wet, don't need much warm-up, give more warning before they let go but they lock up under brakes easily, so are pretty prone to dollar destroying flat spots.

R-specs are faster, they're more nervous and give less warning, so more likely to lose it and hit something.

Some hill climb tracks are pretty scary but this track looks like a flat bitumen strip around a paddock, with almost nothing to hit. So your choice is really around how much damage might he do to your tyres and how much that might cost you.

We have done plenty of track days and a few motorkhanas but always on street tyres.
Rspecs would be a new beast and maybe better left for a track day.

"The devil you know" kind of dealeo.

Will be interesting to see what everyone else is running.

I'm hoping so I've just brought a new set of semi slicks for this weekend. First time not on road tires.

My NA6 at Canberra runs 52.0 on Kumho KU36 and 50.5 on Toyo R888 GG (mediums), so reasonable semi's are definitely quicker, even on a very cold day.

I drive to the track on the tyres and do a small burn-out before each run to clean the rear tyres and get some warmth for the launch. Remember a fair bit of time can be lost at a hillclimb by a slow launch.

The car will understeer through the first few corners until the fronts heat up, so a slow in - fast out approach is safer.

With Fanta I ran semi-slicks on the front and full circuit slicks on the back, as the rear slicks got temperature on burn-out and were good for a launch, but circuit slicks did not get temperature on the front, whereas semis worked well. Fanta still hold the class 4A record at 48.0 in Canberra using that set-up.

I think considering you wiped 2 seconds off your personal best time, I think the money was well spent 8)

You were only .5 second slower than a turbo MX5 !! Goes to show how good driving and good tyres/setup counts!

i've noticed that I lose 3 seconds over 10 metres (the length between start line and burnout line) to a lotus elise on road tyres - no doubt due to his weight over the back wheels. I do manage to pick up 2.9 of those seconds over the remaining 640metres of the course though :/

(measured using both stopwatch in teams hands, and reviewed on video at the starting line, both of us do a <2 sec burnout.)

im dizzy from shaking my head at the amount of guesswork and supposition going on in this thread.

1. throw out old semis immediately. a fellow down here we call crazy dave insisted on reusing his old semis to "save money" and every time he did, he'd write off an NB8B on the track due to loss of adhesion. He did it more than once. False economy much?

2. tyre warmers are not allowed in state hillclimb competition - if its summer then park the car on some hot bitumen out in the sun. If its winter then just run with road tyres - a short burnout will help your off the line launch but a long one will F your tyres. Either way, you are going to have cold tyres at the front when you get to Turn One.

3. road tyres have a different temp profile. they will work when cold - use them instead of a new set of semis (unless the semis are SS/GS compound)

4. hillclimbers run hillclimb compounds. they work when cold. simple. end of argument.

5. "Every fast car will be on R specs." Erm No - the top 10 FTD will be on SS compound slicks.

Wish you got in here before the event!!
I was getting conflicting advice everywhere.

The weekend was great!!

He ended up just using the old adrenalines and seeing how it went.

He was 1 of 2 cars there on street tyres with the other being a Xr4 running on what looked like ku36s. Still a much better tyre than 2 year old adrenalines :grin:

He won his class!!



Ok ok.. Was the only car in the class.
Still, didn't come last on the day.
Learnt alot and now in preparation for next months event.

Was amazed at the level of cars showing up.

Was expecting a low rent kind of day but we arrived on Saturday and witnessed all the trucks bringing there cars. There was only like 3 of us who drove there.

Great weekend and a first for many to come i am sure.

He actually would have come second in the 1300-2000cc sports class if he was a registered competitor. There were 5 cars in that class.
