Thanks for the advice Mark.
Hellmun wrote:For me it would come down to whether you want to modify the car or not? Whether you want a quiet nice daily driver when it's not racing?

Precisely! That's exactly the dilemma I'm battling with.

I'm still enjoying my standard car, and finding little improvements here and there. I like having a comfortable car for occasional street use and weekend drives. It will also be a big challenge to compete in Class 4 or 5 with a standard car, and that has strong appeal. What'll Mike do if I win Class 4 or 5?

On the other hand, there's the modified path. Tweaking my car with a selection of basic mods (Torsen, springs & shocks, headers, catback, intake) should deliver something that can do 1:12s at Wakefield, but it's a big ask to get into the 1:10s and be competitive against Jason's B16A Civic in the supersprints. Would need some serious work on the brakes and engine, just for starters. Getting expensive. And then it'd be a horrible thing for street use.

TBH, buying a used NC for track use is not really an option at the moment. Tempting as it is.

Definitely lots to think about ... :?

Have you been trying or had any luck in moving on the 135i recently?

If you slowly move up the classes, setting records as you go, it would be interesting.

We all know, if you lower your car much, some of your apex points will need tweaking, or your front bar will be dríven over :D

Bryan

With current fields, a mildy modified NA6 running in 5M (or clubman) for track days and 2A or 3A (whichever one the Civics are not running in) for state supersprints (quickest current 3A entrant is Chris Peterson with a mid 13 at WP, whereas the Civic in 2A is in 1.09) should leave you a car that is still nice to drive on the street.

If I was starting again I would do an lsd, cat back exhaust, adjustable swaybars and Koni yellow adjustable shocks with stock springs (running on the lower setting) and 15" rims for semis. This would make it eligible for clubman or modified and should get into 13s on semi-slicks, but still be a nice road car.

If you want to experience a mildly modified NA6, enter as 5M for the July trackday (you can give the R888s a run before PI) and you are welcome to drive my NA6 for a couple of sessions to see how it feels compared to yours and get an idea if you want to invest a little more into the NA6. If you put your logger in you could compare the two cars ?

Thanks for the feedback Peter. And yes I'd love to have a go in your car next time. However after much debate, I've decided that I'm going to continue with a standard car and enter Class 4 (clubman) at the club trackdays. Will also continue with 1B at the Supersprints and try to improve my 1A records while I'm at it. Doubt I'll win anything, but I'm still enjoying what I'm doing, still learning, and not quite ready for the change to modified. The variety of switching between S-specs and R-specs is also really fun.

Clubman will be good as you will have a few cars to chase.

Your welcome to have a run in mine, so we can set it up with Mike on the day.

Hey Bryan!!

Mate, leave Little Reddy alone and run stock. Honestly once you start modifing a 1600 you'll spend mega dollars to achieve reasonable results.

I won't tell you how many hours were spent getting Scooter to produce horsepower but knowing what I know now DON'T even think about doing a 1600, its bloody expensive but a lot of fun (yer right!!!) The car did do a 1.58 at EC and finished the 1 hour so I suppose thats not bad but compared to the 1800 in him now chalk and cheese.

So have lots of fun and enjoy it.

Terry

BTW, noticed today that Scooter has done 122ks, that nearly 5 k since I got him

Yeh, staying stock and continuing to enjoy it! 8)

1:58 at EC, eh Terry? Not bad  . My stock NA6 has done 1:59.29. :P  I've had a bit more practice there though ... and your 1:59 was on a damp track wasn't it?

I just bit the bullet ... this afternoon I traded-in my BMW 135i and replaced it with a 2009 NC2 Roadster Coupe in Stormy Blue. Pretty bloody excited! Say hello to Little Bluey.

Thanks guys. Little Reddy will remain on track duty for now. The fun part is that now our whole family can go on club runs together and take two MX-5s. I could have had an 86 GT for about the same price it cost me ... but I didn't want another fixed-roof coupe. The folding hardtop NC is definitely what I was after, and the ND is looking like it'll be ages away now that Mazda have announced another facelift for the NC. So I finally decided to take the plunge and just do it. The car's got a few minor scratches and scrapes that need repairing (gave me haggle room on the trade), and then a quality detail should have it looking good as new. My head is still spinning at how fast this all happened!
