Psquires 1998 NB8A

Postby psquire45 » Sun Jul 08, 2012 10:52 am

Hi everybody

Well after 3 or 4 years it's time to do my garage thread.

I'll have to upload pictures later

So I bought the car in a reasonable condition with a few niggles etc
Needed a new roof, tyres clutch

Sparco drivers seat
Cusco roll over bar
Lenso something or other wheels
Air pod
FM butterfly brace
Pedders sports springs
DBA cross drilled and slotted brakes.
Clutch unknown bought from mxhevn. ( really should change that out soon)
Replaced the roof
Clear corner markers
And a nice black gear knob.

So last week I've ordered the AVO Turbo kit for it so I'm now collecting bits and pieces for the install.
I'm going to attempt the install myself, brave - stupid - a mixture of both? Only time will tell

Well it feels like the pieces are coming together now for the turbo kit

Break down of costs so far

$3520 turbo kit from avo
$180+$20 shipping 430cc rx8 injectors from eBay
$1630 adaptronic and wide band O2 sensor from mania ( on sale this month saving $150 or so on usual )

Still to spend
$300 or so for some fresh tools, a compressor and air ratchet ( figure it'll make life easier )
$50 for case of beer while installing it
$300 for tuning at mania after I cock up the tuning

So total at this point is $6000

Edit.Just realised I'm now approaching the point where it would probably would have made financial sense to chop in my nb8a for 10k or so and bought a SE. Crap that was quick

Anyone who has a decent SE has replaced 90% of what makes it an SE in the first place.

This makes most sense financially.

Good point :D

And i couldve saved some cash if id gone with the megasquirt right?

Mean while enough whinging out of me about cost. If i wanted a hobby that made me money id exchange forex. If i wanted a deep hole to pour money into id buy a boat. Cars is a reasonable compromise

Keen to see how this turns out. Also purchased the same ECU at Mania on the deal thats going on at the moment.

Should have good support with the tuning since I think Andy has an MX-5 himself (no longer one with a piston engine though).

I was also thinking of buying a factory turbo, but like Dann said, most of the factory bits would be replaced anyway!

yeah i went up and paid for the adaptronic yesterday.

i guess theyve gone through a lot of stock with this deal as they were waiting on a fresh delivery.

on the upside they apparently built my ecu last night ( oooOOOOooo a nice warm fresh one) and will have it at mania today.

unfortunately though im now in the EXTREMELY frustrating situation on waiting for deliveries of all the gear.

might have a bit of a tantrum and stamp my feet a little bit lol i want my toooyyyyysssss

Well ive installed the adaptronic and innovate wide band last night / today.

Lol installing it was the easy part.. Getting it running on the other hand was a bit of a fiddle. After much cocking about tinkering with sh*t ( that i shouldnt have been tinkering with ) and one over heat from trying to get the idle right ( really hope i didnt bend anything ) i let it all cool down re installed the base map from adaptronic and said ƒü¢k it and went for a drive with the fuel correction set in the auto tune

And it WORKS!!!!! Theres a few small hesitations and flat spots etc but other than that it sounds and drives pretty much exactly as it did on the factory ecu  lol after 2 days work im almost exactly where i was yesterday

Ive been doing some research into why the car overheated and i think my water temp calibration may be out.

It was showing 86 degrees when it started to spit into the over flow the adc setting for 85 degrees in the calibration is 220 on my base map.

This matches up to the adc for about 115 to 120 on the calibrated water temp map that Lokiel did :?

I think i may need to do this

Well took the car up to a local industrial park for some un interupted test and tune with good results.

Car was coughing and spluttering at wot under 2000rpm i realised that it was running off the edge of base map. Solved by adding a line over 100kpa and adding a bit of fuel

Over 2000 rpm runs fine upto 5000rpm ( my self imposed temporary rev limit )

Cruise is good

Idle runs up and down a little bit 100 rpm or so
Occaisonal stalling while coming back down to idle ( moving the car around reverse and such )

Runs a little rich still 13.5 afr or so

So i had a few hiccups getting the adaptronic up and running smoothly

viewtopic.php?f=81&t=53874

But all is resolved ow and the car is running nice and smooth. Even on the base map with rapic learn on. The car holds afr better than even the the standard ecu.

So all is in place now to get cracking with the fun bits. Im going to do some shake down stuff over the weekend and make sure everything is good to go but im feeling pretty confident with the setup now so as soon as the turbo kit arrives from avo, in the next day or two its time to get the tools out

Well its been an interesting week

First i watched a guy reverse into the front of my car. He denied it happened no witnesses other than myself so the police wont do anything.

Then my car /garage got broken into last night and a bunch of my tools a tv playstation etcetc all got stolen.
On way home now to evaluate what i have left
