fm vs avo. s+h costs

Postby psquire45 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 5:30 pm

hi

ive been searching around but was looking for a little further information hopefully some one can help me

im considering either the avo kit or the fm no electronics kit and then adaptronic for the ecu ( manias just down the road )

im trying to find out more about the pricing at this point. ive emailed both companies but neither have responded today ( i think fm is on break for 4th july ) *edit lee at avo jsut got back to me

so i need to kind of find out roughly the price for s+h and was hoping some one may have travelled this road before.

avo $3520 plus shipping to sydney from melbourne shipping thrown in for free ( good guy )

fm $3000 + shipping to sydney plus customs.

other than that they seem reasonably similar regarding quality of kits and power outputs etc im also aware that with both kits i will need to add injectors, ecu , possibly fuel pump, wide band etc however does any one have any first hand knowledge of other things that either kit may lack that would add to the final tally.

my bias would probably be towards the fm kit as ive installed there butterfly brace and was pretty impressed with the quality of their work. just unsure about how badly shipping and customs will hit the price tag.

*edit so now the question has changed to is shipping and customs from the US going to be drastically cheaper than $3520.00

avo seem to have a pretty good reputation with their kits. is there any area where the FM kit is vastly superior ?

thanks for the feed back

Paul

For the record, FM are known to have ludicrously expensive shipping to Australia.

It's something around 800 or 1000 to ship that kit.

Did you ever consider begi?

fm vs avo. s+h costs

Having seen all three up close, I would say that both FM and BEGi are better made kits than the AVO.

There is nothing too wrong with the AVO though, it's decent - certainly better than something like a Greddy.

Not sure if the AVO still comes "pre-engineered" as it used to before vsccs, but that should be something you consider... Though if you go Adaptronic you will still need IM240 regardless.

Personally I would have chosen FM or BEGi but good luck with the AVO, hope it works out for you.

I thought AVO only offered a legal kit for the NA6? all others were up to you to make legal.

+1 ref the NA6 kit, although they might have extended the range that complies more recently.

i did consider begi. and there pricing looks pretty good until you add in the options. also ive read some complaints about quality and fitting although that may just have been one or two bad experiences people had and im really not niave enough to believe a bolt on turbo kit will be a straight bolt on. also theres an ongoing thread on the other forum about them not getting back to calls people wondering if they were going out of business etc etc. although i think that was resolved in the end.

by comparison so far lee from avo has been very good with responding to emails and phone calls so thats a bonus.

hmm concerning. but hopefully having Mania less than 10 minutes up the road will be a benefit as they are very familiar with the avo / adaptronic gear so as far as tuning and trouble shooting/ known issues goes hopefully ill be ok.

im pretty sure the 1.8 NB kit doesnt come pre engineered. that said tho i wasnt really expecting it too and it would be the same problem with the other 2 kits. currently im pushing the boundaries of what i really should be doing modification wise with out an engineer anyway ( fm brace, dba cross drilled, cusco roll over, sparco seat) so after this is installed and running it will be time to send it in to get the paper work done.

well payment for the kit went through this morning. so hopefully now 2-3 weeks ill recieve the parts.

time to start organising the cash for the ecu, injectors and all the other bits. ill probably start a long over due garage thread to do the rest of it

Ahh yeah, NA6 - that's right.

There was nothing wrong with the quality and fit of my BEGi parts. They are very nice indeed. Nothing wrong with FM either.

With AVO, at least you have the benefit of "local" support, but Stephanie at BEGi was always very quick to respond to my emails and questions and whether you're 8 hours away (Sydney-Melbourne) or half a world away (Sydney-USA), what difference does it make in the end?

Keith at FM also has a great rep though, they have a good team there.

Shipping is the real issue I grant you. $1000 is pretty extreme. I palletised 800kg of stuff when I moved from the states, and moved the lot for $700. The port/customs charges in Australia actually cost me more than the shipping!!

i figured that would probably be the case with the begi gear. i guess if you sell enough kits theres always going to be a couple people who just arent happy with it for what ever reason.

FM do have a great rep and desevedly so. there gear is awesome and the quality of the bits ive seen is VERY high. i wouldnt have had a 2nd thought about ordering one of their kits ( if i lived in the states ) however i was originally a little concerned with the shipping and customs which by the sounds of your experience with the rates, financially at this point i have probably made the right choice

ive essentially based my decision off avo getting back to me first ( although not really fair considering the 4th of july holiday in the states) , pretty good reputation, no hidden shipping costs etc and having mania a $80 tow truck drive away with their experience with avo and adaptronic is just the sweetener if the worst out comes happen.

PRETTY EXCITED AT THIS POINT THO

Not sure yet. Apparently it's complete with all hardware. Just. Add fuelling and ecu options and away you go.

However...... We will see I won't really be able to tell until I've got the bits in front of me and start dummying things up

I'll try and add as much info into a garage thread as I can as I'm doing it

Yep. Very interested here, would also like to see if/what issues you run into it daily driver/tracking it.

Planning a turbo for my nb8a too soon!
