Coilover spring rate puzzle

Postby Basho » Sun Jul 01, 2012 11:51 am

I'm looking at buying a set of coilovers and when I asked for the spring rates was sent this -

- rears 12.7mm x 160mm and fronts: 13.5mm x 160mm -

I have no idea how to interpret these to convert them to KG/mm

Can anyone help ?

Tell them if they want your business to try harder to answer the question properly.

you cant compare cos you have no idea of the coil count or the steels spring tension.

All you've been given there is the diameter of the wire and the diameter of the spring. Without more information, it's impossible to know the spring rate.

What coil overs are you looking to get, and where from?

I was looking at making an offer on a set of XYZ on fleebay I've been told by a suspension mob that are suposed to know what they're doing that they're not a bad thing .

I realy want TIEN as I have been told that I can get super streets in a 6/4 kgmm configuration and flex in 5/4 which should suite me as the car is a daily and I'm not tracking it attall , budget--or lack of it is hoding me back atm.

I've been talking to Fulcrum , I can install myself and have Action tune it once it's in, it's just the bucks. :(

If it is only for street use why the want to get coilovers. What is the outcome your working to achieve.

The same money spent on dampers would net a better end result if your just looking for new dampers.

Alternatively just replacing springs on ok dampers would get you lower for cheaper.

Both my springs and dampers seem a bit tired (92 NA6) even though the car only has 83k on it , with a full tank of fuel and two people aboard the rear bottoms when it realy shouldn't .

I costed out konis and Eibach and a couple of other combinations and found that if I were to go for say Yellowspeed there realy wasn't that much $ between them and new dampers and springs with the tuneability advantage clearly with the coilovers.

Basho. I have Tein Super Streets on my car and they are just a bit firmer than stock. Very comfy on the street and gives that bit less roll control.

I think you might find the money on quality dampers would be better then Cheap coil overs. It's not just about having a knob to turn but the quality of the valving inside them.

I did some asking around admittedly in non mx5 circles and the comment on yellow speed was "I'd put stock back in just so I could take them out"

If you look at say a set of bilstiens from shox.com you'll find that while not adjustable the factory valving is very good and also progressive.

This is like people who cannot be told that 1000 dollars worth of 2 channel is a world better than 1000 dollars worth of 5.1.

It just is, you arent paying for 4 extra boxes and triple the amp channels. you are paying for quality where it counts.

this is exactly the same.

While i agree with you dann, i would also say that it's not obvious to everyone. The OP may not have recieved any advise on this aspect yet. Give him a chance ;)

I think the point that needs to be emphasized is that almost any aftermarket solution will be firmer than OEM, and it is inevitable that you will hit the bumpstops on Australian roads.

If your goal is to firm the ride up by about 2x and stay off the bumps as long as you can, my advice is to seriously look at FM stage 1 plus FCM bumps 36F/36R.
Alternatively, for the money you are spending consider YSR's or BC Racing BR's (my preference, latter).

The OP has made it quite clear in the past he loves his completely stock NA6 in many previous posts. Buying coilovers does not keep it stock. This would be the reason I'd say just get new springs and shocks.

Buying coilovers will be like buying the 6UL wheels he got off me a while back. He'll return to stock in a month or two. But will be a more expensive task than the wheel swapping.

IF comfort is wanted, and more just refreshing rather than modifying.

Standard springs are fine, they rarely wear, you can get a used set for under $50 (often free)
KYB Excel-G are an OEM replacement shock, they work well with standard springs. (and aren't particularly expensive, I think about $500 for a set?)

Ride comfort is just as subjective as many other things, I find my MX5 to be quite comfortable on lowered springs, my father finds it too stiff, Nitrodann would probably find mine way too soft.

Basho, tbro did an excellent write-up on upgrading his NA8 suspension a while back:
