Whats happening to the MX5 racing??

Postby tbro » Sun Jul 01, 2012 4:22 pm

I've noticed that the MX5 Challenge is no longer but it appears that MRA has taken its place.

So whats happening to all the mxs that previously raced, some come north (CT's car) some go south from here (Ash Millers car) but it seems that
a lot of cars barring Lou (boyracer) are not playing anymore.

Can't be for lack of opportunity as the Prodsports series is still running and have been invited to run with the V8s at EC or wtf its called now!!!
PSCRAQ is still running up here with at the last meeting 14/20 cars MXs
Even up here we are losing some (rwf)but gaining new drivers and some cars are for lease.
Winton seems to have been a waste of Lous time , 4 cars isn't even a race or isn't Victoria interested in Prod sports cars???

SO what is going on??? I know I'm only doing the 1 hour at QR this year (due to, well we all know what happened or didn't happen there.)
and Scooter is sitting in the shed waiting for October
QR will be a MX5 only 1 hour race if all goes to plan plus the CUE 1 hour

Image

So are things just tight or are some following CT, going to bigger, better and quicker and finding that the mx5 is too slow or has its popularity peaked as a race car???
or will PSCRA allowing the gt cars in to race ,spell the end of an old favorite.

MRA Wakefield had 10 cars today, 2 of which were having their first start in a MX5.
Been a fan of MX5 racing since Bob Van Zeg in his Rossfreight team.
I look forward to joining the pack come next round.
So lets go!

Car 206 if anyone was interested.

yes, it was a confusing day, watching a poogit against the mx5s, if i had entered, i might be a little unsure of entering again after seeing that on the start line, which is why i put it under this topic.

i guessed they had the mx5s to make sure some cars were still running at the end of the day :D

seriously , there was some great racing all day and watching the older minis and triumphs was a joy.

The pug was double entered, had two drivers and did similar times to the 5s so why not, although Evil-Weevil might agree with you, I think he had an altercation with it.
So lets go!

Matilda had a great run in the Super TT race in the turbo NB with a 2nd and two 3rds with a best lap I can see of 1.05.9, giving the RX7 and Evo Lancers a hard time - very entertaining to watch, particularly some of her big overtaking moves.

A good race meeting to watch in the changing conditions with lots of MX5 action.

On topic, this is may no longer be mx5 racing, but going down the path of a bunch of similar cars if it follows that ideal.

There were 10 cars so it didnt really need to expand and not really a way to encourage single make racing.

And the quality of those that turned up was really good.

I don't think that one make racing is a good idea, especially MX5's, not enough decent std cars around and NC's are too expensive, even using race only imports.

The MX5 belongs racing in the Production sports cars, maybe split into 2 completely separate races/categories especially when you consider some of the speed differences at some tracks. I would hate to try and race at say Lakeside when the speed difference between me and a Lambo would be roughly 6 seconds a lap (61s to 55s) doesn't sound much but during a 1 hour that would be lapping me 3 to 4 times in a race and speed difference down the straight approx 80kph. QR wouldn't be too bad as there is more room and its a bit more forgiving.

Apparently prodsports are allowing pre 2007 gt cars to race in prodsports eg: Cue 1 hour series without having to comply with the 2b rules. Personally I think this will help speed up the demise of MX5's in the 1 hour races which would be a shame for those who race at EC and know the track and can be fast enough to be within the cutoff rule approx 1.57 laps.

Don't read this the wrong way as better cars give better racing, just worried that beginners in the series/class may get disallusioned and leave. How we can make racing more even or encourage more makes into the class is what is needed I think.

Crewman and I have also discussed bringing in parity ratings. How exactly we haven't work out yet, but maybe power to weight/ intake reducer or handicap racing ( for some reason not liked up here) but this would help encourage those who still aren't 100% sure they want to wheel to wheel race. The MX5 Nationals will hopefully continue, but hopefully without the bloody hysterics about 2a cars like last year.

Dunno what else we can do but I enjoy racing with these cars and these people and it would be a shame to see the MX5 pushed out.

Everyone's going to have an opinion Terry, and on this occasion I disagree with you.

One make MX5 racing would, if properly supported and regulated, be totally awesome. I went to perhaps a dozen Spec Miata meets when I was living in the US and it is awesome racing. I remember one race at Willow Springs, there were something like 8 lead changes in a lap and four different drivers lead at different points in the lap! That's great racing.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the modest budgets of many of the cars in the fields. There were a few guys spending stupid money for those 0.1% performance upgrades, but for the most part there were plenty of low-budget guys toward the front.

I'd consider selling the kart and building a race car if there was a decent series to compete in - though it is more than that too, the difficulty and cost in getting in lots of practice in a race car and the sad lack of racetracks in NSW are other factors.

US style handicaps would be great.

You get X amount of points to spend based on your power to weight ratio.

A stock engined NB might get 25 points.

A wing is 4 points, full slicks is 12 points, front splitter is 3 points, flat undertray is 2 points, coilovers 3 points, etc etc.

Now THAT would be incredible if started here.

run those rules for time attack and door to door.

I've been looking at doing some door to door racing.
One of the things thats put me off is the GT cars.
I'm with you on this one Zossy!
