Engine performance upgrade
If you dont mind me asking how much is this costing you? Is it in the 100's or 1000's?
Do you expect to see much of a perfomance benifit to this?

It depends what you want to get done, but things do add up quickly.
Definite performance benefit - at the moment the car idles around -10 inHg and I get passed on the straight at Lakeside by 1600s!

Re: saboteur's NB
Ok, if starting from stock, wouldnt an intake and exhaust package be the best way to go for hp/$ if going non forced induction? Im just sayng because im wondering what to do on my own car for track days. I always wondered about porting/head work but have no idea how much it costs because its always a quote and have no idea about performance benifits either when compared to other mods.

Headwork is where 80% of the performance is in an N/A car.
no exaggeration at all.

I was replying to this guy, who apparently really would never have guessed.

Oh really, so your saying if breathing mods like exhausts etc can get you an extra say 10-15 hp, head work etc will get you around 50-60hp? really?

Yeah over 50-60hp.
Stock is what 110 odd rwhp, intake and exhaust is 125 rwhp, headwork gets you to 200rwhp (ask wozzah).

What do you mean "gets you to 200 rwhp?" You can get 200 rwhp normally aspirated or with a turbo strapped on?

Re: Engine performance upgrade
I mean that while the exhaust/intake alone will only get you to 125rwhp, whats inside the head gets you the rest of the way to 200rwhp.
This is an oversimplification. You need the bottom end to hold together and an ecu. A stock bottom end would be unlikely to stay healthy for very long at those rpm, and the stock ecu has to be changed for ANY increase in power much past 15% or so.

Re: Engine performance upgrade
People with street cars dont run big enough cams or serious enough exhausts to make that last 70hp.

Re: Engine performance upgrade
this is so open ended. You do not need to do any mods to the engine to enjoy or be skilled at motor sport. Modifying any engine comes down to the usual areas for modification - always has done. There are threads which go along the lines -what is the best performance increase I can get without spending a bucket of money. You can spend a lot - labour rate $60-100 per hour so your budget / priority is the issue. Go and talk to say a sponsor and ask them to relate the mod to a cost.

Re: Engine performance upgrade
The question was asked after I said that intake and exhaust mods were where only 20% of the performance increase in n/a form were to be had.
The forumite asked me can you really get another 80% power by working in the head.
It was simply a question of what can be done and how.

Re: Engine performance upgrade
OK so the OP has an NA6
I'd go for a enlarged CAI, headers, exhaust cams& have good leads.
I would'nt bother with adjustable cam sprockets depending what profile you use. But it will net you better results if you do get them.
you can increase the rpm by 400rpm quite easily with a $4 crystal in the standard ECU plus you will keep drivability withiout the hassles of tuning an aftermarket ECU. You can also adjust the fuel a limited amount through the AFM.
but its marginal stuff.
My guess is that you'd have somewhere close to 95RWkw. but that depends on whose dyno you are using & what sort of day it is.
2nd hand stuff will reduce the cost a fair bit but if its all shiny & new expect 3-4 K ?
you will then also have to upgrade your diff......
lets open a Can of worms shall we?
id go for a 1.8 torsen conversion. One of those has served me extremely well. that will add another 1-1.5 K to the bill
Of course if you want to do extra head work to compliment it all.....the sky is the limit as far as cost is concerned.
Not sure where you live.....which racetrack will you be using mostly? But one of the turbo guys in the club was beaten by an more mature lady driver.....so I think he upped the boost LOL. It didn't help.
sure 250rwk will more likely get you to 1.04 at Wakefield racetrack. A standard NA6 would never get that.....no matter who's drivig. But 1.12 is very possible with some mods. But yo gotta be faster than Slammer & Mr Berthold....and those are very big boots to fill.

Re: Engine performance upgrade
The above will change the characteristics of the engine.
I felt the headers changed characteristics most. As in where the power band was before & after. In my case the cams just made it more pronounced.
ECU will then make it hectic in the upper ranges. As well as when at WOT. But patchy was a real cow down low as well as while cruising. I never mastered the art of tuning ECU's
tuning an ECU can get exy.
