Alloy wheel nuts - Are they legal in NSW

Hi everyone,

I have been seeing conflicting info about this. I'd like to ask 2 questions about the product in the link below

- Are they legal in NSW
- Are they unsafe (I've seen posts about wheels coming off but that may not be the fault of the part...)

What are your thoughts?

I've used D1 wheel nuts before and they are fine.

I would urge you to pick either a black or silver Colour though as they are prone to discoloration.

As for the legality... No idea mate.

All the wheels are still on it after 3-7 Rolls
with no name alloy nuts

O and it broke two rims in the spokes

4.2.2 Wheel Attachment

Replacement wheels must be designed for the particular hub/axle and have the same bolt/stud pitch circle diameter and the same centre location method. The wheel nuts or bolts must have the same tapers as the wheel. Wheels with slotted bolt/stud holes must not be used.

Replacement aluminium alloy rims must be located on the hub/axle by the same diameter centre spigot as the original wheel, using suitable adaptor rings where necessary.

Wheel nuts and bolts must have a thread engagement length at least equal to the thread diameter, except where specified otherwise by the vehicle manufacturer.

Wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face and the road wheel must not be used unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer.

Modifications to disc brake callipers, hubs and suspension and steering components to enable the fitting of replacement wheels must not be undertaken.

I had read through that definition. Looks like material does not factor into their definition.

I'd say from that (and the fact an experienced racer has vouched for their strength) I am happy

so all the silvia guys doing 4 to 5 stud conversions is technially a no no?

If you can get an Eng Cert you can do basically anything. Most of these rules are about what an eng should or shouldn't cert.

The chapters tend to start with a very short list of things you can do without a cert (springs and dampers, 50ml drop etc). Anything else needs a cert. Then there are lots and lots of factors for the Eng to consider.

Maybe all Silvia drivers get Eng Certs

An engineer would probably laugh if you asked him to engineer your shiny alloy nuts.

Was always taught that mixing steel and aluminium on fasteners was a big no no during my engineering studies.

Definitely did not have any alloy nuts on the FSAE car even when we were trying to lighten it up.

I'd be worried about rounding off the nut too when tightening.
