amp/audio problem

Hey guys,

up until recently my basic audio setup (came with the car when i bought it) of an alpine mrp-t130, some alpine speakers and a simple kenwood hu has worked pretty well, not super loud but whatever. now suddenly it doesnt work at all, regardless of whether I play a cd, ipod or the radio all I get is static coming from the left hand speaker. Ive checked all the cables and what not as best I can, but I really know sh1t all about electronics and audio systems so Im not sure how to self diagnose. If somebody could point me in the right direction or something that would be great.

Head unit turns on yes?
Amp turn on?
Connect multi-metre to the amp outputs, any readings?
