projector healamps

Does anyone know where to buy projector headlamps for a na? I've seen these http://www.dapperlighting.com/classic-h ... model.html from a old post but I only need the lamps. I've looked on ebay but cant find any proper projectors.

the projector lamp is a completely different light. The NA uses a 7in round parabola. The projector itself is small and relies on a housing for it to be mounted and for it to be aimed. If you want improved lighting performance there are a number of threads. An NB headlamp series 2 has a projector headlamp but I bet the projector is not sold separately. Even if it was how would you engineer it into a workable headlamp ?

I've seen a ke70 with a retrofitted projector in a 7" round headlamp but it was in a magazine and didn't say how it was done. I don't wan to put my xenons in cause i'll blind everyone.

luke there was a very recent post on improving the existing units. Essentially this is achievable by buying standard 7in inserts eg Hella. This gives a new lamp with perfect reflector ie not tarnished etc. Then if you have full voltage to the units the lamps will perform well. You can check your local auto elect for info or go to say Hella or Narva web sites. No idea about the linked lights- no name brand. Also have a look at the Miata site for feedback on the Hella units bearing in mind we are rhd.

Hi Luke,
Captain Scarlet posted a thread here: viewtopic.php?f=57&t=52890 - he replaced his OEM lights with Cibies bought on ebay. The only difference between Cibie and Hella is the lens but they will both fit.
The thread also includes pictures of the installation.

Valeo are well known in Europe- the link provided by luckycat is useful. If Cibie is made by Valeo that was probably something to do with owning a brand- the latter maker is a large component maker in Europe an supplier to OEM. Just as an overview 7in headlight systems were virtually standard for many years and the light unit eg sealed beam semi sealed beam , halogen insert have same lug fittings and so are interchangeable. I noticed the original Mazda unit is a Koito brand who is a major lamp maker in Japan and traditionally a Toyota supplier. The lighting unit is commonly known as an insert. You will be able to buy a known branded insert in Au as already noted. These lamps were designed around about 40 years ago and that was common in Europe. The Hella unit lense is flat and some inserts especially sealed beams were convex and some restorers baulk at the flat version merely because it does not look the same albeit interchangeable and far superior to old sealed beams.

I read that post not long about the hella lamps new globes and the wires and I'll most likely end up doing that. Does anyone know if the lamps off a e30 bmw would fit? They look a bit smaller then the mx5 ones but they have a proper projector lens in them.

Hey Luke if you are going to stick with the 7" lamps then I believe the globe will be type P43t. 60/55W. You can get them at any motor accessory shop, and even some supermarkets.
Just check the base.
If you are going to do projectors goodness knows.

The e30 probably uses a projector made by Hella but it is part of the lighting system ie mounted in a housing -and very unlikely that it was ever serviced by BMW - the same as later model NX5's - you would not be able to buy the projector . The 7in system is not a bad one and a far easier proposition for bringing back to optimum

The E30 BMW had circular headlights.

The intention would be to see if those headlights are also a 7inch circle, and if they would therefore easily fit the MX5.

The only issue I can see is that the e30 had 2 circular lights on either side, most likely one low beam, one high beam.
I ave no idea what the beam pattern would be like to put a hi/low globe in one of them.

The high beam light would porbably project way off into the distance (even on low beam) and the low beam light would probably project not very far even with high beams on.

just had a quick look on the internet- my earlier post was a bad guess. Looks like the E30 has 5.75 in inserts and all likeliihood just with halogen bulbs. These lights are not compatible with an NA. 4 beam systems usually run high beam insert on the inside probably H1 and the outside light is an H4 60/55- which means on h/beam the inside light and the outer are both lit.
