Re: miss.... fire????
That might be the issue.
NB (and afaik all BP) are BK5RE-11 (I'll check and confirm)
edit:
Just checked the NGK site, BK6RE-11 is for B6, BK5RE-11 for BP
Looks like the wrong plugs.

Yes, but a 6 is a cooler plug than a 5. So if you went back to a 5 then you'd make things one step worse. My money is still on a lean fuel map from a rough dyno tune, unless you have a manifold leak.

Re: miss.... fire????
so i changed to the plugs i had in the NA6 - some crazy plat-iridium fusion thing - reinstalled the cops and the car drove fine
I was having a good look at the ecu whilst driving - well as good as i can do whilst driving - ƒü¢k it is a sh*t ecu - it doesn't seem to update the fuel and load values in 3d map or text value map - but in 2d it does - and 2d is a major fkn pain in the ass because you have to switch between rpm settings. I have logged a bunch of data that i going to send to a mate who will do some magic and i'll be able to look at it using the i2 motec software - makes life sooo much easier than using the out-dated haltech winX data viewer.
Going to try and get a wide ban and install it this weekend - see how i go
thanks for the help guys!
oh - a before and after of spark plugs
before - they all looked like this

lean? quite possible.
I checked for vacuum leaks but could find anything - so that's a plus.

If not a rhetorical question, then it was a safety measure, i.e. fuel stops being pumped as soon as air flow is not detected at AFM. There's a work around on p82 in Norm Garrett's MX5 book:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=21251&p=258755#p258755
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=21217&p=257757#p257757
Btw, which BP engine is it? NA8, NB8A, NB8B, or other Mazda model?

Re: miss.... fire????
I have worked around it with the ecu wiring - i can plug it back in- there is just more pain in re installing the intake and getting air through it.
Engine is out of an na8
Bought an innovate mx whatever it is from plus last night so I'll install at some point this weekend and see what i get.

OK - thought it might have been out of an NB. Good luck now that you've got the Innovate.

Re: miss.... fire????
so - i got the wide band in last night/early this morning.
took it for a drive - under load and above ~40% throttle, the car runs around the 13's (lambda value) - cruising at slight throttle and low load (stand street driving), the car sits between 15-16 - accelerating causes the car to lean out a bit further (say to 18) then it starts to decrease down to the 13's.
So yeah, a bit lost on whether i should road tune it to run a little richer at road speeds. I know a few modern cars run around on lean mixtures at low load and throttle postion, but unsure what i should be doing with the 5.
Anyway, thoughts about tuning were quickly put to an end by my car dropping a number of cylinders and having to be crawled back home. This morning i had a bit of a play with it and think that 3 out of the 4 coil on plugs are dead I conveniently had some spares here but haven't taken the car back out yet. Little pissed that 3 have died in one is hit. Unsure why they have died either and I have had one die previously
So - pretty lost on what to do now and can't really be bothered thinking about but i need the car to get to work on monday so will have to figure something out tomorrow.
Thoughts?

Re: miss.... fire????
I bet its wiring.
As for the lambda values, 13 isnt a lambda value, thats air fuel ratio.
Its unimportant what any part of the tune is like except the past that it missfires in.
Just look where it missfires.
It should be 14-16AFR at cruise, 14 odd at idle, and tapering to 12.8ish at 100kpa and tapering down to 11.0 ish at 10psi.
On gasoline.

miss.... fire????
What Dann said .... Also, if 3 of 4 cops failed then wiring must a little funky. How are the cops dríven? Off the stock batch wiring through a replacement ignitor or direct from the ecu as seq spark?
Do you know if the dwell was adjusted for the cops?

Re: miss.... fire????
If you dont drop dwell to 2.5ms and add the caps they missfire.
In a hurry, I bet that wasnt mentioned but I thought it was. Sorry if It hadnt been yet.

Re: miss.... fire????
when i first installed the cops i was running 3.2ms dwell (iirc) - when i put the capacitors in the system 2x 4700uF in parallel, i dropped the dwell down to 2.5ms - this fixed the original misfire issue. I briefly ran the cops at 5ms dwell the other night because the ecu hadn't updated when i changed back to cops - the car ran fine though.
The wiring for the COPs is as per this thread on miata turbo http://www.miataturbo.net/showthread.php?t=12704 see 1.6L schematic - too much stuffing around with the ecu to run direct fire so i didn't bother. I should add - i didnt use a gutted ignitor - used an 8 pin deutsch plug so i can still use the ignitor if needed. Surprisingly cheaper to buy the plugs then a second ignitor.
This is an outdated wiring diagram I did https://www.dropbox.com/s/kig45k5vk48rl6j/e6x%20to%20NA6%20loom%20BP%20engine%20WD.%20by%20plohl.pdf- i ended up running all connections back to the main loom so it replicates an NA8 - so the fuel signal comes in at pin 2R and i used the air temp wiring from the maf so it was a little neater.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hyibfjyff0wd1l7/ECU%20pinouts_xlsx.pdf this shows the pin outs for an NA6, NA8 and what the ecu was wired to when i got the wreck - the wreck was an NA8.

Re: miss.... fire????
So - i think i figured out what might have killed the cops and possibly caused the misfire. When i was at the last dirt sprint i left my ignition on whilst i popped the bonnet after a run to leave the fan running - then promptly walked off and had a chat to toppertee - so yeah, it must be his fault haha anyway, car was on ignition for a while. Didnt think too much of it as because i am teh noob. Heading home that day was when I started to get the misfire, bit over a week of driving it too and from work and bye bye coils.
The only thing i didn't get at the time was the misfire with the stock NA6 coils. I haven't had a chance to hook them back up yet, but i will at some point. The car has been running fine and i have been playing with the map to and from work each day - starting to figure out the ecu a bit more so it is slowly getting better. Going to try setting up the throttle pump map to stop it leaning out so much when you stomp on it.
