static/high pitched whistle on some am stations.

Postby trader » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:15 pm

Ive put up with this for some time now and need a fix! Unit is a panasonic and not all stations give me this problem the whistle is more annoying than the static which is just like being too far from home. The funny thing is if I'm stationary I can hold on to the ariel (screw in type) and the whistle goes away - sound is then crystal clear. Could it be an earth problem?

Maybe a silly question.

Does it happen everywhere?
ie: if you're on teh other side of town does it still do it?

It may be as simple as radio interference, AM seems particularly bad for it in general.

Dear trader
I am not expert for radio. Have some elektronikk. Your radio modern and compromise built. Hand on antenna adds capacitance to antenna. This appear to approve listening by changing impedance. I think your radio unit heterodyning on some station. Poor circuit alignment. Try other unit.

CAr radio antenna have coaxial connektion to antenna. This sometimes poor quality and can affect signal. Also AM station reception not so good as antenna compromise too, wavelength for AM station much longer than FM. Wavelength australian FM station about 1.5 metres as guess. AM station wavelength near 180 metres. Guess how long AM antenna should be for best reception! 90 metres as 1/2 wave ! And car poor ground plane, half plastikk. Old car better more metal. But not sporty unless ball-tearing Monaro 350.
