I believe they are all compatible. Just that Japanese headunits FM bandwidth is a bit narrow and misses out on some of the lower stations, but you just buy an extender from Jaycar.

headunits are way way to cheap these days. if you dont want to cut the wiring then buy the loom which is cheap as chips.

Thanks for the reply , got told yesterday at Autobarn that they're not , not suprising considering that I was enquiring about ice  , I know AM on these units is probably a no go --but then again it's not much chop even on Aus units.

I'm fed up wih searching and wonder if anyone has installed an ebay import .

I looked at the ebay China head units. I then noticed that Repco sell some of them, and when on sale (right now) they are the same price as ebay. There's a basic unit at Repco for $39 with USB and memory card, FM, no CD, basic audio control.
Plus you get local warranty which is great, because I do expect that the Chinese ones bust regularly.

I bought my Kenwood head unit from the UK last year and was concerned about FM stations, but it's fine. I think you'll find that all head units will all be ok regarding FM.

Nothing to do with the wiring thats not the issue it's the radio reception, wireing is easy. unit compatible radio plug to ISO and car loom plug to ISO I already have the car loom plug to ISO.

I was quoted $399.oo for a Clarion CX501A yesterday by Autobarn , I can buy the US version -CX501 which appears to have a few more features for $280 at my door from an Australian supplier.

The downside (probably) dodgy warranty and Aus Clarion dealers/Clarion are highly unlikely to fix them if they go wrong.

And all academic if the radio only half works

I'm pretty sure US head units are not compatible with Australian radio frequencies. UK ones I'm not sure - I would recommend asking some car audio specialists (such as the people on Mobile Electronics Australia forum) to confirm this before purchasing.
