Changing brake pads hurdle

Hi
Decided i would give the brake pads a go (unsuccessful, the one of the EBC pads i got dont have the slot for the spring on the pad :S - actually, are these springs even necessary?)

My issue:
when trying to fit the new pads, i had the piston ring pushed back past the rubber boot/seal around the piston ring. With the thickness of the new pads, i could not easily slot the caliper back over the new pad without badly rubbing the rubber boot and potentially tearing or deforming it.
Is this really an issue? What should i do? Just force it back on and hope for the best? I guess i should sand down the shims as they are covered in rust to give it a smooth slide?

take photos, but basically you should push the cylinders back further.

They could probably go back further, but i already had them past the top of the rubber boot/seal. Felt if i was pushing the piston ring back any further i'd be damaging the rubber boot.
I reassembled the brake cause i need the car tomorrow (with the worn pads, no issues with sliding the caliper back on...Pics will come when i find time to work on the car again...

Also Dann, whats the point of the pad springs? Like i said, on one of the EBC pads i got shipped from MX5parts, the slots are not on the pad...so i cant slot the springs.

You mean the shims on the back, or the springs on the sides?

the springs stop the brakes from making a clicking sound as the pads hit the front of the caliper when they grab the disk and move within the caliper.

Yes they are the right pads
At the moment i have a 'sticker' on the back of the pads where the shims go. Its some what thick. What is it and can i remove it to get the extra clearance?

Also, for greasing the caliper pins, is this stuff any good? http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... escription

I cant find any specific brake grease products at supercheap so im not sure what to use?

The sticker is anti rattle and squeel, it replaces the shims.

Thanks, couldnt find anything on the supercheap site but that stuff looks exactly like what i need.
Dann, any benefit to have a shim and the sticker? or should i get rid of one?

also, i have contacted mx5parts and they have offered to give me a partial refund or replacement pads.

how ok/not ok is it to run pads without the springs?

You do not run the shims on pads with the thick sticker.

As for the springs that go for and aft of the pad, they are there to reduce noise ONLY.

Hi, I realise this was a while ago, but I am having the same issue. Have bought EBC greenstuff for the front but can't seem to get the piston back into the caliper far enough to fit over the pads. Have already scored the inside of the piston bores trying to push the pistons back.
Just wondering what you ended up doing in the end?

I have EBC greens in my car - leave the backing plate/shims off, the piston nestles up against the padding stuck to the back of the pad.

Yeah I pushed the pistons back in pretty hard (with a G clamp) and it just doesn't create enough clearance. Not sure what the problem is...

Both fronts. Just saw some specs on ebay that says the EBC greenstuff are 14mm. So across both pads there's an extra 1.5mm I'm trying to squeeze in.
