Differences in Elf 5W40?

Postby Roderic » Fri May 25, 2012 1:39 am

Hi All,

After all the reading through the posts I'm thinking of trying some Elf 5W40 in my NA8 engine.
But from looking on their site there seems to be a range:
SOLARIS LSX 5W40
EVOLUTION SXR 5W-40
EXCELLIUM XLL 5W-40
EXCELLIUM FULL-TECH 5W-40
EXCELLIUM NF 5W-40
EXCELLIUM SM 5W-40

Only one I have found for sale in Perth online is the Evolution SXR for $59?
Just then I thought I had figured out which brand and viscosity I was going to choose, this throws another curve ball in the decision making..... :(

TotalFinaElf - French stuff. Use Penrite. It's Australian and excellent lubricant. Less than $45 for HPR 5 at SuperCheap.

Still going on about oil!
Just put some good quality branded stuff in there - you're motor won't know the difference.
Considering your motor is older, I would go for a higher viscosity oil.

I did not mean to offend anyone with my last post. No sarcasm was intended.
I'm asking the questions and taking in the answers so that I'm not the one who ends up putting sh!t into my car.
This group has always been very helpful, thus I was asking was I thought was legitimate questions.

Sorry again. happy driving to all.

Don't be concerned by grumpy replies, nobody means anything but it.

I agree with trying a 5w/50 oil if you can.

Have a look at the oil bible for some interesting reading. As Bruce noted quality oils from known makers of the right spec will be fine. I would suggest it very unlikely that anyone of us have an insight on a technical basis on the Elf oil. Oil co's will give you free advice on their product related to your vehicle.
