EVERYONE

I have spoken with Richard from QR this morning regarding a few things:

Their Office will be open after 8.00pm on the day, maybe earlier!
The transponder comes in a pack with cable tie etc
The Display unit has a clip that would clip onto a visor
The transponder is best under the front skirt/lip - the electronic timing is a 'loop' within the track surface

John Tetley has effectively travelled the world looking at various systems and this has been the best of what he saw - interest around Australia has been very encouraging and he would like to see this same system in use at all tracks Asutralia wide. Several other circuits are now currently investigating for implementation

QR can be contacted on 1800-RACERS should you have any further enquiries

Thanks :D

Brilliant idea!!

In order that NSW/Wakefield Park can evaluate this new timing system, they send 'Little Reddy' up for 21 May ALL EXPENSES PAID, and you then report back to them!!

You never know until you ask!!

Ha ha

I like your thinking Roger, but don't like my chances.

In any case, I've forwarded a copy of John Tetley's email to Mike Hicks and asked him to discuss with the NSW Supersprint Panel (Mike is the Chair, in addition to being Competition Secretary for the MX-5 Club of NSW). It would be fantastic to see this system rolled out at Wakefield Park and Eastern Creek.

HEADS UP :!:

I have just been speaking to a lady (identifying herself as AJ) at Qld Raceways. I was enquiring as to whether I could come out to Willowbank today to buy one of the transponders.

QR have no transponders for sale due insufficient stock. You will have to hire one and they are going to charge $20 without a security deposit (but I will bring $80 with me just in case). Hirer's names will be taken and, when they eventually get enough stock, the hire fee will be deducted from the $80 purchase price if you want to buy one. AJ said the transponder is zip tied to the front rego plate. QR expect to have stock to sell within a month...ish.

Thanks, that's interesting as Richard gave me no indication of that when I spoke with him! My understanding was that both the transponder and the display unit were available as we even discussed the method of attachment in the car, nothing said that 'hire only' until sufficient stocks arrive

Oh well, so long as they have enough to cover everyone that's fine - I assume then we get the unit for keeps at Lakeside in July for $60

I have his email so will flick him one and confirm that

I hope they have enough for all of us on 21 May - AJ was a bit vague when I asked her how many they have. Her first response was "about 30 or so". When I asked her what happens if we have 40 or so starters, the answer was "we should have enough". I'm not feeling too much confidence here...

She said they would take new stock (when they get some) out to Lakeside and, if you've only had one hire prior to then, it will cost you $60 to buy a new one.

Very interesting indeed! A 'Track Attack' day at Lakeside can attract up to 120 entrants!! One wonders what happens if that is the ONLY current method of timing! They had 34 entrants running last Thursday

I have flicked an email to Richard at QR asking for clarification on this, as our discussions both Thursday and yesterday gave no indication that stocks were not available for purchase, and if they only had '30 or so units' how the hell would they run a meeting?

Soon as he responds, and I wouldn't expect that until Monday at the earliest unless he is on duty this weekend, I will let you know

You can't run a Championship Event with competitors on different methods of timing

Thanks [lucky I had the Blood Pressure Monitor removed last Wednesday!!!]

To clear up some confusing and contradictory info we have been receiving, I spoke with Neil Lewis (Events Secretary) at QR this morning.

QR have 150 transponders which they are holding as "hire units" because their orders for new units have been slow getting to them. There are currently 400 transponders awaiting customs clearance and they hope to have them delivered and available for sale on Monday 21st. If they don't arrive by then, the hire arrangement will be $20 per unit and that $20 will be deducted off the new price as per my post of 12 May 12 at 0934 am.

Jumping in a little late here but I've had the chance to see these things being tested at QR in many ways and they seem Extremely accurate. A Motorcyclist had one taped to the bike as control and had 9 in his leathers, going past the S/F line at 240kph 8/9 of the ones in his leathers read excactly the same and the other was 0.00001 out. Pretty good i think! It was also done with a car, 7 taped in places around the car and on the day they couldn't fault one.

For those only coming out for track days this transponder is the only thing you will need to purchase. $80 is not an extravagant outlay and it is a ONCE OFF payment. Mr Tetley has greatfully reduced these (originally $150) and you should have no hesitations at all in getting one as he has worked hard at trying to provide an accurate, hassle free, minimal problem and professional system so that all you have to worry about is getting in the car and driving to the best of your ability.

My 2 cents.
See you all out there in a weeks time

Totally agree with you, excellent value for money and accurate - love the idea also of 'in-car' display, whether you get time to look at it is another story! :D

The only hassle really has been getting the real story about will they be available to purchase next Monday or not, quite a few differing stories but lucky JBT was able to clarify yesterday with QR :D

I'm still not exactly clear on where it can be attached but that can be sorted out on the day, and I will go prepared to pay the full $200 in case the stock has been cleared by Customs and they have them

Pick my car up tomorrow, having the rear callipers re-done, much that I don't go fast enough to warrant using the brakes anyway!! Thought i'd get in first on that one :!:

See you there Monday - PS: Thunderstorm forecast for Bribie Island Sunday, so long as that weather stays up there :!:

Regarding attachment of the transponder. Neil told me it can go anywhere but it should not have any metal between it and the road. Suggested locations were:

Under or above plastic diffuser/engine under-tray
Rego plate
Chassis rail

Neil also said they have tried putting it in all the places it shouldn't go e.g. in the front door card, glove box, rear seat etc. and it still worked OK. However, there is no guarantee that it will work in those places. He reckons rain won't bother it and it can be covered by race tape without it affecting performance. I'm thinking I'll mount mine with a zip tie on the engine side of the diffuser in front of the condenser/radiator and cover it with race tape just to keep it a bit weather proof.

I think I will wait and see on the day, I could attach to the number plate frame as enough area there for that, no sure how a cable-tie would fix it to my diffuser - I liked the comments 'D-train' made on testing :D
