Metalic clinking noise when turning left

Postby Kikuchi » Wed May 09, 2012 12:41 pm

I've recently started getting a weird and often very audible sound coming from the rear, it's hard to pinpoint where as sometimes it straight down the centre above the boot, and sometimes it sounds like it's the wheel wells. It sounds like I had just run over gravel and it's bouncing up and hitting metal. I noticed it first when hard turning left mainly sweeping turns rather than the usual 90deg turns. During the turn there is not much noise, may be a bit, but right after the turn is when it's quite audible.

I've had a quick check, wheel nuts are tight, sway bars and the usual bolts around the suspension area are all tight. I've only done a real quick check on the left side as I was in a hurry when I checked it a few weeks back.

I've tried searching up google and on this forum, but I haven't been able to find anything. Most posts were about low speed (eg parking lot, driveway) noises, rather then under heavy turning. I will most likely take it to a mechanic anyway, but what I'm after is a rough idea of what could be wrong. If it's a the diff, then I'd be looking at getting an lsd while it's out etc.

My car is an nb8b '01, ~79,000km, slightly heavy rims (round 9-10kg i think), bc racing coilies. Tell me if you need more info.

Usually the exhaust hitting somewhere, most likely on rear suspension control arms or axles. If you turn left then the exhaust system will sway to the right. Get underneath and try swinging it about a bit.

Funny you should mention that willstar. Just before posting this up, I jacked up the car and was going to move the exhaust around and then remembered it'll be hot as hell, so I dropped the car back down, I'll check it out later.

The thing is, the sound is very random, not recurring. Literally sounds like a whole bunch of gravel just went up the wheel well or the underside of the car.

Maybe a silly question.

You've got low offset wheels haven't you?

They aren't rubbing on something when the suspension's loaded are they?

wheels are 8" +20. i don't think they are rubbing, since it's actually not seriously low.

After my nb brake upgrade I didn't bend the dust cover back far enough and the driver side was rubbing the disc when I turned. Maybe there is something stuck in your dust covers.

Worth checking the wheel nuts. I had a single partially lose one that sounded like the car was falling apart....
