Does a Pod sound as good as CAI, and best sounding muffler?

Postby Drek » Fri May 04, 2012 11:09 pm

Hi All - my 1.6 NA is such a hoot to drive, but I can't help thinking that my driving experience could be greatly enhanced by some big induction and exhaust noise (I'm sure my neighbours would agree if I asked them, too).. so my question is - would a pod filter be as loud, or nearly as loud as CAI, or if I want the 'sporty rorty', do I have to go CAI? and is there a muffler that most people agree is the best overall for the reasonable budget burbly - 'yeah I'm fast - just listen to this noise I'm makin'... ? I don't need long trip tinitus - just borderline legal would be fine.. any opinions appreciated.. 8) cheers Derek

I installed a K&N pod filter on my Clubman shortly after i bought it. I was a bit disappointed with the induction roar. On my previous cars (not MX5's) i have always installed pod filters but on the MX5 it just wasn't loud or dramatic enough for me. I now have a Mania CAI and believe me it sounds wonderful if you like noisey aggressive induction roar :D

Cheers

Pod and CAI will both be about the same volume from outside the car.
Mania one sounds louder inside the car because it intakes air right at the base of the windscreen.

think, your vacccum cleaner doesn't get any louder or quieter if the hose is connected to the front or not.
But if you connect the hose, then hold it near your ear, it's a lot louder to you.

Plus, it's hard to define "best sounding muffler". I've heard the cheapest mild steel setups and prefer that sound to stainless or even titanium setups. It depends on what note you prefer and the individual setup...so it's try and try and try unfortunately (if you want "best sound").

I have the mx5mania CAI paired with mazdaspeed extractors as well and I couldn't be happier with the sound. An exhaust is on the way once I find a RS*R exhaust for sale..

I stuck on a Typhoon, I think the noise is perfect!

I recently got a Typhoon.
The sound is great. I used to drive a K20 with a CAI and this sounds almost as good. A lot more grunty but not as loud.
Intakes make the car so much more fun to drive.
