NB8A Installing aftermarket alarm.

Having recently purchased my '98 NB MX5 I'm keen to secure the car a little more than it currently is. I have realised how easy it is to get into the boot of the car so I'm looking to remove whatever hacked up immobiliser that is making it impossible for me to start he car with the door open and constantly flashes my indicators and replace it with something decent. I have heard a lot positive about the Mongoose M80 and I have also been eyeing off a few Viper kits.

The main features I'm looking at are:
Immobiliser
Remote Keyless (to add to what I believe to be the factory central locking)
Lift Kit (wind windows up/down with the remote)
Remote boot release

With the remote boot release I plan on removing the boot latch from the centre console and having it only operated by key/remote therefore making the boot a little more secure.

The questions I suppose I have are:

• What is installed in the car by default, do they come with an immobiliser with coded keys (I have little black heads on the keys) and will an aftermarket security system with its own immobiliser kill the one in the car or work together.
• If anyone has used a window lift kit before, can you suggest a kit and with which alarm you used it with
• Any suggestions on an alarm - after speaking with my insurer they tell me there is no benefit in my installing any particular brand or spec alarm as it won't affect my policy, I'm purely doing this for my own peace of mind/security.
• Any additional sensors suggested as I intend of parking the car with the roof down a bit.
• Suggestions for boot solenoids?

NB8B came with a boot solenoid, if you can get one it will make things easier you can also modify the jaycar cable pull style boot opener to fit.

I've got a similar model to yours so hopefully this info would help:

1. If your current immobiliser is giving you headaches then I would assume that it'll be easier to just use the aftermarket one?;

2. An alternate model of the Mongoose series should include the lift kit;

4. If your budget can stretch a bit, I would suggest 2 options:
(a) a vibration sensor that you can install into the centre console (I would hide it underneath the cigarette / coin compartment right behind the gear stick), this triggers the alarm when someone sits in either one of the seats;
(b) a SMS function where the alarm would automatically send you a message whenever the alarm goes off. You can even set it so that the siren stays off but it'll alert you as soon as the alarm is triggered. The only upkeep would be a pre-paid mobile sim that you'll need to recharge every year / time you run out of credit;

5. I'd thought the NB8A had one... or at least my remote boot release still worked when I still had my NB8A.

1. I believe the immobiliser in the car that is causing me a headache at the moment is aftermarket and in there in addition to whatever is factory. Hence my plans to remove it.

2. I didn't see any alternate models i believe the lift kits are usually just something that runs off the AUX output of the alarm systems tho

4. I assume that most alarm systems had a vibration sector in them by default however I can see the benefit of an additional one that I could remotely locate for the purpose you illustrated, thanks. As for the sms the only one I have seen so far like this is the Viper Smart Start system with GPS tracking, however for the money this costs I had thought that purchasing an iPhone 3G and leaving it hidden and constantly powered in the car using iCloud "find my iPhone" would work out cheaper ha. I'll have a little look around to see if there are any sms ones like you suggest available that will work within Australia.

5. Unfortunately not electronic, just the cable based boot release from the centre console and the key on the boot of the car. Well in my 1998 Series 1 NB this is the case.

I used a cheap as, ebay central locking solenoid on my NBA wired to my alarm. Now has 3 options, cable,key and alarm.

Will get in and look at the workings of the lock function in my car over the weekend when I clear out my uni work to see what it looks like. As I noted earlier I'm looking to remove the cable for my idea of "security" so I suppose removing this would give me an easier/extra anchor point on the lock to use.

Yeah I did the same thing (credit goes to Andrew for showing me how), the write up has since been archived. I tried looking for the photos online but I may have to search some old hard drives to show a "how to" for this.
