Hi Woz,

my only un-answered question is how do you chock the internal oil relief without removing the engine?

Cheers
Nick

Look down the the oil pump from the passenger side. You will see a bolt or allen key (not looking at it right not, cant remember exactly which). If you undo it this has a spring under it which provides tension on the pressure valve, you can put washers on top of the spring etc etc.

Is it possible to "unstuck" the valve from that point?

Just another question guys....

Let's say my engine truly has high oil pressure, not just a faulty gauge/sender, what sort of internal engine damage should I expect from the 3 months that I've been using the engine? Wouldn't be surprised if the engine was like this when it was in the previous car.

Yes unchocking it would be doable, just remove the washers.

As for damage, the bearings are unlikely to love it but the main concern is oil pump failure, not the rest of the engine.

On my engine it can only be done by removing the sump, but mine has a FWD oil pump, possible that the MX5 pump is different?

This is a piccy of mine

this would be the underside of the pump, right Woz?

i'm experiencing 4 bar at idle from cold in my car too, and can hit 6 bar with just moderate load.

Yep, the underside.

Since I fitted the external reg the car is constant 60lbs, cold/hot/warm. Doesn't move. It saw over 100 on the old engine every cold start.

Do you have a remote filter setup? If so, are the lines feeding correctly (centre to centre, offset to offset)?

I remember having a problem with a new installation that was attributable to crossing the lines, but can't remember if it was too high or too low pressure

Yep, I have a remote filter. It's all plumbed correctly, and works fine :)

The question was actually directed to the OP Woz, but I am really glad that yours is OK  (memo to self: avoid ambiguity in posts  )

Sorry for digging up an old thread, was looking for an oil pressure solution the external releif valve is new to me but looks like wozzah is on the money. Iv'e been reading up on beefier BE gears and there are quite a few horror stories with them then I came across his thread,

Just a question, if you do run the peterson regulator does this negate the need to use the factory releif valve on the oem pump? or do you still chock/shim it in conjunction with the external regulator?

You are right you know.... I have confused myself a few times and maybe posted missleading posts re that... Oops.

But the external relief valve goes on the threaded plug that sticks out of the engine right woz?
