Are there any interesting new cars arrived there for picking?

It's good to know that some things are interchangeable to the MX5. Someone I was in touch with recently used Magna front calipers on a hot Mirage (a stealth Lancer track car!), because the Magna calipers were a parts-bin upgrade almost as large as the early Evo (standard/non Brembo) caliper.

Some people use a combo of FC RX7 and Ford Probe bits, too.

Maybe you picked up a spare V6 from another Mazda?
Keep an eye out for Ford's local Capri Clubsprint.
Some decent bits to pick from one of those. Much nicer than the first ones, at least.

Thanks guys, I'm so relieved it actually started. It's a huge milestone, hopefully it won't be long before it's roadworthy.

Lol, no skids until I make a dry sump setup I'm not sure I want to take it to the track. The sump is tiny and I *really* don't want to destroy the engine.

Thanks Bizi, I basically got to pick n payless, went straight for the mitsubishi area to get the bits I needed and then left. I didn't check for anything else as I had to be back for uni.
I think once the car is finished I might buy a long block to make a dry sump setup out of the car which I can quickly install once it's done. The sump it has at the moment should be fine for on the road but I'm not so sure it has enough capacity for track work.
That's all the videos I have at the moment, tomorrow I'm going to try to sort the air leak so I might make another video if I can get it to idle properly. Once I've done that the main things left are to join the front and rear sections of the exhaust, make a few brackets, clean up the wiring and finish off the intake and filter enclosure. *I just remembered I also have to find a Nopro washer bottle or make my own, the filter is going to go where the original was.
Also my slave cylinder is leaking again so I've ordered a replacement.

I figure if you're able to master it in aluminium, you'd be able to sell a few here, too.

Just a suggestion in case it's interesting enough for you.
I bet that there are occasionally some useful cars there, in terms of interesting bits.

Thanks everyone, it's a great feeling to be this close to being able to drive the car.

That Nopro bottle link is great Bizi, I'll have to look into getting one of those.

Well I fixed the massive air leak it had (the silicone couplers on the manifold weren't sealing properly, I replaced them with rubber ones which do) and it now idles at a steady 700rpm, all with no tuning whatsoever! I'm confident there are no more leaks as I had to unscrew the throttle bypass quite a way to get it to idle.



You can tell it's not tuned at all when I (try to) give it a few revs, lol. I also didn't have any clamps on the intake manifold

Progress has been a bit slow but I managed to pretty much finish the exhaust. I had to split the front section of the exhaust into two because it was impossible to install. There also wasn't room to put another V-band in so I made a band clamp which I think will seal OK with some high temp sealant. This joint will only be undone if I have to remove the front section of the exhaust (very rarely) so I'm not too worried about it being a bit difficult to install. The V-band will be just before the cat.





So that's just about the whole exhaust done, just 1 more pipe to make which joins the stainless part to the steel part.

More boring little stuff which has to be done to finish the car, this time it's the cooling system.

The original heater pipe went between the cylinder banks from the front of the engine to the rear. This wasn't going to work for the MX-5 so I blocked off the original hole and made a new one at the front of the engine. I also extended the radiator pipe. I'll post a pic of it on the car tomorrow.





Next semester I'm going to do a 12 month night course at TAFE on aluminium TIG welding, hopefully I'll be able to start making things for people when I've had some lessons.
