The OEM late NA6/NA8 braces are just hollow, relatively thin-walled tube, so yes, aftermarket braces are better as they are thicker/stronger steel and square-section, but they are hard to find. I've only seen very few for sale from Cusco and Auto EXE, but I think Ultra Racing might make them too.
As with an rear upper strut brace, people are quick to dismiss it because experts say it's bunk, and so very few people have them. I have one installed on my old car (now owned by Sailaholic) and it made a very tangible difference. I won't even think twice about installing one on my next MX-5.

BMC is very easy to make yourself. Just buy a used strut brace and modify it.
